Dear friends
An 18-year-old Iranian is facing imminent execution on charges of homosexuality, even though he has no legal representation. Ebrahim Hamidi, who is not gay, was sentenced to death for lavat, or sodomy, on the basis of "judge's knowledge", a legal loophole that allows for subjective judicial rulings where there is no conclusive evidence.
Hamidi was arrested two years ago in the suburbs of the western city of Tabriz in the East Azerbaijan province after a fight with members of another family. Three of his friends were also involved in the incident and were subsequently arrested. Later, the four were accused of homosexual assault on a man and of attempting to abuse him sexually.
A person convicted of homosexuality in Iran can be lashed, hanged or stoned to death. The law includes a variety of penalties for different acts: 99 lashes if two unrelated males sleep "unnecessarily" under the same blanket – even without any sexual contact. A boy raped by an adult man would also be lashed if the court decided that he had "enjoyed" the experience.
After three days in detention, Hamidi confessed to the crime, allegedly under torture. The other three were cleared of all charges when promised by officials that they would be freed if they testified against Hamidi.
However, last month Hamidi's alleged victim admitted that he had been under pressure from his parents to make false accusations. Nevertheless the local judiciary has insisted that Hamidi should be executed.

"Rash of teen suicides tied to anti-gay bullying

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Prosecutors in New Jersey are deciding whether to file bias crime charges against two Rutgers freshmen in connection with the suicide of a fellow student.
He was one of at least four young men who killed themselves in recent weeks after being bullied over sexual orientation.
18-year-old Tyler Clementi, a talented musician known as quiet but happy, jumped to his death last week.
Prosecutors say he committed suicide after his roommate streamed video on the internet of Clementi having a sexual encounter with a man.
Rutgers freshmen Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei have been charged with invasion of privacy.
More severe hate crime charges related to gay bashing could follow.
"Privacy violations are just the tip of the iceberg," says cyber crime expert Parry Aftab. "We're looking at civil rights violations, wire tap, federal and state, probably harassment and many other crimes."
In addition to Clementi 13-year-old Asher Brown, who told his parents he was gay, fatally shot himself last week after they say bullies pushed him too far.
15-year-old Billy Lucas of Indiana hanged himself three weeks ago after classmates had bullied him for years over his sexual orientation, and 13-year-old Seth Walsh from California died this week, eight days after trying to hang himself from a tree.
He also is said to have endured abuse from students for being gay.
The Trevor Project, a gay and lesbian advocacy organization, has launched YouTube campaigns to try and prevent suicides of young people who are victims of the same types of bullying.
The Trevor Project also has a 24 hour life line where they speak to more than 30,000 young people around the country.
It's still not clear if suicides for young gay men are increasing or if there's simply more reporting of their deaths."

I think we have a huge problem on our hands. We need to make changes now. Its not right. Opinions welcome and for those who think that the recent "flood" of suicide threads is depressing its not because we are honing in on the subject. It is merely because there have been many recent incidents in the news and we should NOT try and cover them up.
Edit: Here is a video of Ellen Degeneres Speaking out about the subject.

I want to also say that I will keep "screaming" to the world about the issue of teen suicide until somebody gets the message. The fact that a persons life ever gets to the point of them wanting to end there life to me is horrible. The fact that WE ever let a persons life get to that point is atrocious. The fact the we sit here and let somebody do harm to them selves and chose to ignore it simply because of someones personal choice is an outrage. I will continue to fight. I will not be silenced. You can expect more topics on this subject. Not to piss you off but to blanket society about it until things change.
I want to say that as odd as this may sound these horrible events are creating the strength I need to find purpose in my life. I can't be a voice from 6 feet under. Out of all of the horrible things that go on in this world I find a certain connection to this cause and want to fight with every breath that I have left.
