Enlarge them without sacrificing quality :?

That, my friend, is simply not possible. :(
A picture is made out of dots. Enlarging a picture means adding new dots. And there are limits in how many new dots you can add without making it look like shit.

The question should be more: How far can I enlarge a pic without making it look too terrible...

Maybe you'd like to post a picture here or send me them somehow? I'll prepare a quick overview with examples then.

UR right!

Correct!

Thx for your help ;) Just asking other guys about their experience using various tools for pic resizing...I use Irfanview and I think it's a good one :)

Post some examples. :D How much do you enlarge them?

There is always loss. How visible this loss is depends on the quality of the original picture. The better that is, the better looks the upsized picture.

I think you should forget to make a picture twice as large or something. At least not with the pictures form porn sites. Those are already in jpg format and mostly only with a poor quality.

Please look at the pictures in original size!

Example one, bf of mediocre quality: enlarged up to 137%, so it still looks acceptable.

It's problematic though to do anything further with the picture (contrast, curves etc.), you'll see the lack of quality in the tresholds between green and blue etc.

Well, that might work with good quality pictures but not with pictures of bad quality.

I use a free program named Smilla Enlarger for it, which produces better results. Here is an example with a very low quality picture of a mere 32 kb upsized to 164% so it fits the screen.

Irfan View (with just standard options) produces fragments - look at the neck/background. Smilla offers some softeners to make it bearable.

I think it's a good program but like you am open for other suggestions. :D

You're welcome, but I demand to see some of your results. :p

The IrvanView is okay but you can hardly see the back of the nose with the largest one because everythings gets blurry. I gave your Sammy a bold 200% shot with smilla and some contrast-afterwork with ps:

The quality of resizing results depends upon the quality of the software you use. There is a lot of free software out there, but if you want really professional results in image manipulation, you really have two great choices for your needs:

1. Photoshop - horribly expensive and made basically unnecessary by the following:

2. Corel Paint Shop Pro - 99% of the functionality of Photoshop for 10% of the price. I have been a Paint Shop Pro user for >15 years. This is a very deep feature-rich program. I spent $25 for a book on how to learn it in 1 month with 30 lessons and that made me into a power user. Excellent image processing software has a long learning curve: you need to learn about compression, pixel structure, layers, masking, feathering, textures, etc. The more you dig into it, the more you love it and you can become an expert in less time than you imagine.

If you are poor and just can't afford the above, go to cnet.com and search for free image software. I am sure you can find something good. Pay attention to editors ratings and customer ratings and make sure it is not just a trial period, instead of unlimited freeware

You may not have access to free tutorials, though.

CNet should be your source for free software. It is way better than zdnet for that because zdnet is part of a huge publishing empire that is likely to steer visitors to their advertisers and their products more than CNet does. Either way brace yourself for lots of advertising and devious buttons to click.

Image processing and enhancement is so much FUN. I hope you find the tools that are right for you and that you enjoy using them as much as I do. Best wishes and good luck!

@valiantcrusade: I agree. I had CorelPhotoPaint11 and it's an excellent program.
If I recall correctly: When enlarging with it I used the enlarger and then the face-softener afterwards, which make those nasty blocks go away a bit. The results are/were nice.
As for PS: the standard is not that great.

@Zortec: Thanks from me too. :) I tried it and it's nice. But it is "batchable"? Can I include into an "action" without having to select the options for each picture? I have saved my settings with alien but I have to select that with each picture and have to click to "okay" each time, which is rather time consuming if you have a set with 500 pics or so.

For professional result, you can't depend on free software! You can use OnOneSoftware's Perfect Resize. It runs on Photoshop.

Of course it all depends on your source photo. Small sized photos are impossible to enlarge because their pixels are so packed closely together. So everything has a limit. In movies, we see that small details in a photo can be enlarged clearly. Don't believe that!

I like using Paint.NET. It is very similar to PhotoShop, and it's free!
