The Government Believes There's A New Edward Snowden

On Tuesday, The Intercept, Glenn Greenwald's journalism startup launched with the backing of eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, published a major report on the composition of the U.S. government's terrorist watch list.
According to CNN, this has convinced the U.S. government there is a new leaker within its ranks — a second Edward Snowden-type with access to closely held national security secrets and the intention to make them public.

If the CNN report is true, the U.S. government is convinced the leaks that appeared on The Intercept include information that post-dates whatever Snowden once had access to. It also validates earlier speculation that there is an additional well-positioned leaker of national security secrets.

As U.S. News and World Report recounted in early July, there was abundant evidence that NSA-related leaks appearing in two German newspapers did not seem to come from Snowden's cache of doents. Greenwald responded to the revelations by tweeting that it "seems clear" there's a second leaker within the U.S.' national security apparatus.

Now, that tweet looks like evidence Greenwald is indeed sitting on doents totally independent from the Snowden leaks. The U.S. government reportedly believes this to be the case.

Unknown at the moment is who might be doing the leaking, and how much that person has handed over.

Glenn Greenwald would not comment on the CNN story when reached by Business Insider reporter Hunter Walker, but said "there are definitely more stories based on the Snowden doents coming."

... I am proud our dirty laundry gets aired once in a while unlike almost every other government.

I'm sorry what? America is pretty much the only country with whistle blowers? Sorry, no, that's insular and arrogant nonsense. I'd go so far as to call that kind of American exceptionalism insulting. (I certainly find it insulting when Americans insist their country is better than everyone else's)

By all means be proud you have whistle blowers (it's a good thing), but don't insist no one else does!

Also - before you get on your high horse AMERICA EXILED SNOWDEN - HE IS STUCK IN RUSSIA BECAUSE IF HE CAME HOME HE WOULD BE PROSECUTED FOR TREASON - your country actually treats whistle blowers quite badly! As evidence, look at poor Chelsea Manning - that's what your country would do to Snowden if he came home!

When was the last time we heard about a Russian "Snowden" who stole secrets from the Kremlin and released them to the world? When was the last time China's secrets were compromised? Maybe they have it worse than America and I haven't heard about it.

When you have dictators you are right, it's really bloody hard to speak freely. The world is not divided into USA! USA! USA! and dictatorships though!

Okay. Let's talk about other Western governments? England, France, Germany, Italy or even Australia all have secrets. Every government has secrets. Any one know of any cases where secrets were stolen and published?

Every country has had, and will continue to have, its whistle blowers. The UK learned about the lies that got them into the Iraq war through whistle blowers. Ireland learned about the shenanigans in our banks that bankrupted our country through whistle blowers. There are whistle-blowers all over the western world!

Many western countries have laws to protect whistle-blowers, does the US? If so, why are they failing so badly and allowing the continued persecution of Manning and Snowden?

Look - I am delighted there are more leaks, but please drop the "we are better than everyone else" nonsnse.

Like I said - be proud that there are whistle-blowers in America - yay! But you don't have to diss the rest of the planet to be proud of a good thing at home!
