The Leather Scene

In an attempt to broaden my social horizons and meet new people, I decided to check out a leather bar. I should state that I have no particular attraction to leather and until now, avoided the scene entirely because I assumed I wouldn't fit in. After sucking down a couple of beers (which I hated; I'm more of a "sex on the beach" kinda guy), I finally began to relax and notice what was going on around me. My first observation was that there were men of all ages, race, and size. There didn't seem to be any type of segregation. Everyone mingled and socialized with everyone else. I loved the camaraderie. Best of all, many people spoke to me to simply say "hello". Others just wanted know my name or where I was from. I know some of you have walked into bars where no one says a word to you unless you do so first. But here's the thing: there wasn't a lot of guys I was attracted to, but I loved the energy. No one talked about Lady Gaga (love her by the way) or carried on endlessly about their face book page. It was about drinking, flirting, and having a good time. My question is can you be attracted to a scene more so than the people? Do leather bars know something that flashy dance bars don't? Who out there is in the scene and wants to share their thoughts?

Not really fully in the leather scene, just playing on the fringe in some specific kink stuff, but I've visited leather bars in various cities and your description fits them equally.

I think that the open camaraderie is due to their mutual acceptance of the kink factor among men who don't take themselves too seriously. It's a very "male" thing to get involved in any aspect of the leather scene - although there are some great ladies in it as well. Some of the guys have incredibly fascinating side hobbies and interests (other than the obvious erotic stuff). I had the pleasure of meeting a man one time in a leather bar in San Diego who appeared to be a huge, brawling biker type. That was his outward persona. He of course enjoyed man-2-man sex, but our chance conversation struck on a common passion - music recording and production. I was involved in it professionally for a time, and this dude was dabbling seriously in audio out of interest.

The freaky thing? This guy was way over 300 lbs., about 6 foot 4 inches and had that mean and cold gaze of an outlaw when he wanted to impress or intimidate. Sitting with me and just chatting about techie stuff, he was like a big pussycat and shyly admitted that he played classical music on the viola and cello and was an avid collector of baroque music.

The moral: go visit a leather bar if you'd like to meet guys who are different from the average, and be prepared to be pleasantly surprised. I have had men pointed out to me who (in their workaday lives) were bankers, businessmen, lawyers and even a medical doctor.

Another thing I've noticed in leather bars is the drinks are 'honest'. IOW the bartenders put a full measure of hooch if not more in your serving. Often times too much and you say to yourself, ""Whew, this is strong, this is pure booze".

Yeah, noted that as well. I guess the clubs' owners want to make a continuous buck and get repeat clientele as opposed to one-time only dudes. Leather bars cater to a niche crowd, so decent drinks and munchies (if offered) at popular prices will pack the place out and make it feel more inviting.
