No I think it's something that's in the mind and can only affect you if you believe in it, it's psychological.
On the other hand, just assuming they are real for a minute, from what I remember reading some years ago, they can rebound on you ! But I think it's all rubbish, there are strange things we don't yet understand, but this is Hammer horror stuff
