We may aculate hundreds (if not thousands) of clips, yet more often than not re-visit the same favorites. There are a handful of really ancient clips, dating back to the late '70s, that still turn my crank immediately- no matter how many times I've seen them. Might be because those guys were not overexposed: today, a lot of what we consider "new" is really just the same dozen guys doing 20 clips a year. Its "new", but not that different from what they appeared in two weeks ago.

Choice was all the more limited because vids and magazines were expensive. (And it was a drag renting a vid, only to get home and find that the hot guy on the box only had a murky, grainy solo; or worse, getting home and finding that the vid is a compilation and that the one scene with the hot guy is again that damn murky solo you saw previously in a different title.)

You really had the feeling you couldn't get enough of some guys like Jeff Hammond or Kris Lord. And you'd wonder why, when some did so few, they had to be paired with such ugly guys. Today's porn-stars may be overexposed but at least if they are paired with someone ugly, there's the chance you'll see him with someone better next week.

Amen, brother: so awful and so true! Not an isolated experience by any means: I'd say roughly half the tapes I rented either didn't feature the hot cover guy at all, or featured him in some useless way like a five-man orgy pile up where he could have been anybody. Solos can be OK with the right performer, but I have never encountered an orgy scene in gay porn that was worth the effort of filming it. I get that some guys enjoy such group fun in real life, but on screen its like watching paint dry: too many limbs flailing to be able to focus on anything wankable. Orgies were all but unwatchable in older "filmed" porn due to the murky lighting, high definition makes it look prettier but its still "meh" as wank material.

Back when Titan and Raging Stallion ruled gay porn, they would waste at least half the running time of any given vhs or dvd on ridiculous five-six-seven man group scenes. Inevitably, these scenes would be the only ones featuring the guy on the cover that made you want to rent or buy it in the first place. You'd look forward to seeing him in action, only to get mere glimpses of him obscured by five other idiots. Joe Gage pulls the same crap with some of his current extravaganzas: hires some really hot men that you can't find anywhere else, then sticks them all into an eighty minute Cirque du Soleil knockoff. Distinguishing any hot guy in an orgy scene is impossible when they all have the same shade of spray-tan (as in most Kr1st1an Bj0rn flicks) or are all wearing the same leather chaps (several older F4lcon flics)!
