Orwell warned of a society where speech and thought are strictly controlled and any deviation from "correct" speech and thought was persecuted ruthlessly. An Orwellian state in our World? probably North Korea.
Indeed many of the things he wrote about have come to pass, but his world-view was that of an Englishman in the 30s-40s; he didn't have any idea about how computers would have become in central to every aspect of life; computers as in PCs, mobile phones, practically every bit of machinery & especially the internet.
He couldn't have ever imagined the powers that the NSA/HCHQ & most big companies, whether part of the government or in the private sector, have in their grasp.
Aldous Huxley had it more right, oddly enough.
