Here is just few basic security rules:
- Don't chat with anyone without face photo (If you would find that photo isn't real - do not communicate anymore)
- First real meet in day time on neutral public place, where is allways another people like a Restaurant or a Café (never your place, nor his place)

Verify of authenticity is not easy. Check if he's in friedship with some other users (who have phtos) if in his profie is visible guestbook and what is written there, or if guestbook is hidden.
Various dating sites has various certificates of authenticity.
I know one what promotes thematical parties in gay clubs here in Czech Rep. and Slovakia (cca 2 actions a month) and on every such party is some admin who sits there with notebook. Sinnerr is totally right, most of serious dating sites have the Authenticity Verification process... same concept as the Hottie badge for GH, they will ask you to take an actual picture of yourself with a sign where you hold it next to your face and this serves as your authenticity proof. DN and RealJock are using this method and I also use it in one of our social networking website so your photo can be related to your profile. It became a normal practice since it does happen quite often that people will just use other people's picture. The best example I can give is that Alex is a model and his picture are floating around the web like porn on the Internet. We came across users on website that claimed that Alex was their boyfriend or husband etc. We have been able to DMCA some of them, but we can't dmca them all... and in fact it's pointless. Any person with advanced skill in photo composition (Photoshop) software can remove, add and transform any pictures and it's not always evident that the picture was photoshopped.

I have no experience in this regard, but I think if you really want to meet these people, you have to choose the places and cirstances, with an alternative plan B in case of problems.

I think it really isn't a good idea to sit into car with some who you'v never met before. First meeting should be on frequent, neutral place in day light.

I should add my bit here cause I've done a lot of chatting online over many many years. Everyone is going to lie about something weather it be their photo or their age or what their into to make them sound more interesting. Now when I say everyone lies that's not to say that there aren't honest people out there online just that even if they don't realize it they've probably described themselves in someway that isn't quite accurate. It's really hard to describe your self in a profile. If you can have regular conversations then you can be pretty sure he's not just looking for sex. There are 4 types of guys I've found one the guy who is just looking to get off. two the guy who is just fucking with you looking for entertainment. Three the con artist who's looking to rob you blind. Four the honest guy who is really actually believe it or not just looking to meet new people and make friends. Those are the types of people I've come across. Some would say assume everything your told is a lie until proven otherwise but that can make you seem distrusting to the honest guys out there and make them harder to find. I wanna say one thing about online relationships here. You can know someone online for 20 years but it doesn't matter. When you first meet them in person you have to treat it like you've never meet them before. Knowing someone online is not the same as knowing them in person no matter how long you've known them.
