An initial single license for a single domain, copyright removal fee, additional skins, development/installation/support assistance, domain name, first year or two web hosting packages with sufficient bandwidth and transfer rate, Email support and hosting + basic email security... hmm I'd say it cost close to a good $1500 CAD for someone who just begun and doesn't have a grasps about web development. Oh and I almost forgot... TIME it take so much time, but once you become very familiar with it and have a good ripping off affiliate program well it will pay off in a year depending how popular your forum will become. So yes they can give and you can take without the need of understanding. ;)

As someone who did run two forums for many years, you're talking a few grand a year to support just a few hundred users, and a shit-ton of time. The latter I really can't over-emphasise.

There's a good reason my first sentence was in the past tense - this is why I have so much respect for the people who volunteer their time and effort to help run this place!

I actually helped a friend administrate a political forum back in the day, and I can clearly remember all the trouble that went on behind the scene..

The costs to purchase the forum's software license and renewal is pretty high depending on which software you use. The price of skins, unless you know HTML and CSS you'd have to opt for buying a skin. On top of this, some times when the software developers decide on a major revamp you may need to re-purchase your skins for the updated version of the forum's software (like the time when vBulletin added the social network add-on to their software) That was a bloody nightmare. Removing the credit notes that comes with a skin if you are OCD like most web developers.

The price for adding the blog software (which I think was a 1 time fee). The cost of the CMS module, which I think isn't necessary.

There are also yearly hosting bills. You also pay if you mess things up during an upgrade and lost your back-up and need a roll-back.

And on top of that there is the price of being told off by a member that your site was rubbish anyway when they got suspended for breaking the rules.

Fun times.

Ungrateful little fuckers :rofl::rofl:. See I understand very well what you're saying, I'm about to release a whole community system similar to LinkdIN, in fact LinkdIN are using the very same code base I use which is an OpenSource software that one can modify to their liking, but to modify that software... one better know all HTML, CSS, Java Portlet Development, Java Script, PHP etc etc... it's a very difficult system to customize as it does so much things and if one little ungrateful jerk comes saying my site sucks... I'll send him the Russian mafia on his balcony LOL.

8 years to develop a whole community 2 seconds it take for a user to call your work shit

I have fixed the Hosting issue since I host pretty much everything , every day Alex would wake up go in the data room and proceed to manual data backup... money is really really not the issue... TIME is. And in my case I host, databases, DNS (private and public), windows/unix all of it. But you know at the end of the day... it's fun:p The day I will not enjoy what I'm doing I'll be giving/selling all those servers, sell the company and teach social science until I die ;) - I'm not there yet :p

I've had a lot worse thrown at me in doing this job - and I don't even own the place :p

You definitely need a thick skin to do this, and a good sense of humour ! Fortunately I have both ;)

Ingratitude is of all times. I remember the shock I felt when I entered the internet for the first time and saw how many things are for free. And still, after all those years it feels strange. It was a lucky shot that I discovered Gay Heaven and every day it feels as a warm blanket. Even when the moderators should decide to ban me from the forum, I would feel gratitude for the nice time I had. In real life you have to pay for everything. It is a miracle that they don't tax (until now) breathing in The Netherlands.
