There is no way to tell. It is hard to accept this, but it is true. Many people had good, solid jobs and pensions and lived in wealthy countries up until recently. A friend of mine, his father is technically worth about half a billion. But still he worries. He mush transfer 'personal funds' to prop up, along with others, a big corporation. And he worries about losing everything. His health is already gone. So no one knows. Only a tiny number of people are truly safe.
Arumbob it is a good question to ask though. I am sure a lot of people feel very uneasy at present.
I think that until now many here have grown up in consumer societies. That has been our main function --to buy shit, not to make it. We produce very little. Now we are making the transition to being non-consumers, all of us, as a society. Instead of consuming, we will simply pay... for nothing. Carbon trading for example, it consists of nothing but an idea, a set of beliefs and agreements --a few will exploit the new trading system, many will be exploited.
Also, we will be/already are non-consumers in the peculiar sense that we 'consume' electronic or digital media. 0's and 1's. This is the new entertainment. As we pay and pay more in taxes and fees, for breathing basically, very few will have enough left over to truly consume... i.e. nice clothes, going out, holidays, travel... but the 0's and 1's will still be in boundless supply. All free! This is how we will keep ourselves going.
So there are two goals, depending on your income level: (i) try to save for a rainy day, but not via the conventional banking products and (ii) get out and have some fun while you still can. Travel, etc. We still enjoy many freedoms. But, quiet quickly really, all of these things will be taken away or curtailed.
