Answering that question is not very informative for you, because I am from The Netherlands. But I think the question is wrong. It should be: what electricity company uses you to make their big profits to pay their management idiotic salaries.

Our power company is Energis, a regional daughter of the RWE... but just as Tjerk already said, that won't help you much.
But the funny thing is, here in the Saarland we have several coal-fired power plants in my federal state, but the energy prodiced there isn't for the public, it's mostly used for our coal mines.
We get our energy from the french nuclear power plant Cattenom.

As a regional cabaret artist once said:
"The Saarland is the only federal state without nuclear power plant! We get our energy cheap from Cattenom."

Here, we have no choice but to use Vectren, they have a monopoly on both electric service and natural gas and practically hold us hostage...

They have raised prices every year for the past 10 years, sometimes twice a year and as much as a 50% increase at times. Right now they are trying to raise rates another 10%...

Oh, and just before they raised it 50% a few years back, they moved out of their historic building (which now sits empty) and built this smaller concrete and glass monstrosity right on the riverfront...

In the process they also tore down a several historic landmarks, one of which also housed one of Evansville's first gay bars...

Would you advocate pulling down the Big Ben clock tower because it's old and replacing it with a giant glass digital clock??

(Big Ben is actually the bell by the way, not the tower it's in ;) )

A large part of the tourist trade exists for people to look at historic buildings & monuments , and if people weren't interested in the past it wouldn't happen. I don't believe in preservation simply for the sake of it because it's impractical and not always possible, but a certain amount, and especially important landmarks should be. For one think we all need a certain something to identify with and these things create a feeling of stability.

Nice to look at and good psychologically. I've always hated some beautiful old building being removed for a glass fronted modern monstrosity just to house rich big business who couldn't care less.

No, I'm not kidding. I bought my house 8-9 years ago and my heating bills in the winter have gone up from $250-$300 a month to $500-$700 a month...

It's not just the loss of historical sights. It's the fact that not only do they ruin the atmosphere with these modern monstrosities, they leave behind even more historical buildings to lie empty and deteriorate and ultimately become a burden on the tax payers. Vectren did it, Old national bank built another even uglier building right next to the Vectren building, and save for a few leased offices, left the largest skyscraper in town deserted. Hilliard-Lyons relocated to a new two story building two blocks away and left the oldest and arguably most beautiful 12 story high rise vacant.

And it goes beyond that, our mayor has gone against the voters wishes (we wanted our sewers upgraded to prevent flooding)

and demolished an entire city block of historic buildings along with a memorial park at a cost of millions to tax payers, to make room for a new arena. He claims that events at the new arena will revitalize downtown businesses. But the Events center right across the street and the historic fine arts theater that his predecessor thankfully did restore (it also houses one of the top 10 Signature schools in the country) have failed to do that. This is costing us over $300 million, and they still don't know how to provide enough parking. To further fuel the fire is the fact that only two blocks away from the new arena is an abandoned hospital campus that is 3 times larger, not historical and has all the space needed for parking that was sold for $10.00 (yes, ten dollars) at a tax auction. It was purchased by a developer with close ties to the mayor...

Then there's the fact that this new arena is to replace an old one on the other side of town. For this one he wants to tear it down and put in a sports complex, the cost $93 million...
But the real problem here is that this area adjoins a nature preserve. The noise and lights from the few night of the year that the stadium is used now has already had an adverse affect on the wild life in the preserve and all the activity and even brighter light from an outdoor sports complex will be even worse.

And you don't even want to get me started on the urban sprawl crisis were facing...

Hi Brmstn, when did you start to light the fire in your display picture? May be that's the main reason for the high bills.

Fuel for that fire comes from a different supplier at a much lower price, it only cost me my soul...

It's not that I'm so into the environment, as it is I'm against waste. These old building that they tear down cannot be replaced and they cannot be replicated because the building materials today are not the same. Houses and buildings built a hundred years ago or more used old growth timber, hand molded brick and hand cut stone. They were not built to code, because there was no code then. Instead they were built by reputation, and without regard to cost, hence most were over built even by today's standards. Modern building use treated, farmed lumber that is nowhere near as hard or strong as old growth timber, engineered brick and stone and are built to a minimum code. Old buildings were built to last at least 100 years, and everything built since WWII is designed to last 50years or less. So basically these new buildings will deteriorate faster than the buildings they replace, or put another way in 20 years that new bank building will be in far worse shape than the 100+ year old hotel it sits next to...

So they tear down these old building to make room for new ones, then they leave the building they were already in (which is usually much bigger than the new one) vacant, and it starts to deteriorate, which lowers the value of surrounding properties, forcing them to relocate, and then those buildings deteriorate, and from there the urban decay spreads like fungus until 20 years later they decide to "revitalize" the area again at the tax payers expense...

In the mean time as these old building disappear and the newer ones quickly become out dated, these corporations decide to move their operations to that wasted farm land and forest area just outside of town which draws even more business from these dying areas. And it just keeps spreading like an epidemic...

So, my real issue is that just like the banks and corporations that have caused the economic crisis were in now by looking for the quick buck and an easy temporary fix without regard for the future consequences. They are doing the same thing, like locust, they consume and move on to consume more, leaving devastation in their wake.

And this could all be avoided if they just maintain and use those old building that have been there all along...

Besides, if they really want to boost business in the downtown area, fuck the arena, put in a Walmart...:p
