I've really picked them this week - films that I thought I would (or was hoping to) enjoy only to be dissappointed. Following Pale Blue Eye (slow & dull) I went with Minions: Rise Of Gru (not great - not enough of the minions !) then Sunshine On Leith - too much "musical" and I'm not a fan of Proclaimers anyway so should have known better, but hey it turns out George MacKay can sing as well as act!

So this evening having 2hrs 41 mins to spare I went with this. I have read many reviews of this and loads and loads of critics and filmgoers are in raptures about just how good it is, indeed some have hailed it as a masterpiece (not all of them liked it though). Well I loved the very start with the tribute to Chadwick Boseman - the montage of clips with no Marvel theme music and the way the opening of the story dealt with the great loss, both on-screen and off screen, was really touching.... then things started to go downhill imho. Suddenly Vibranium (which has always only ever been found in Wakanda - we all know this to be an incontrovertible fact) is now found elsewhere, and this elsewhere is the home of a completley new race - never mentioned in any of the umpteen MCU movies so far but here they are attacking FBI operated ships etc. As to the new race, the Fishmen as a Wakandan nicknamed them - my immediate thought was Aquaman meets the underwater Navi from Avatar. Overall I thought it was a bit of a mess with it's clumsy confusing plot; bloated backstories and should have been more bravely edited as it's far too long. Maybe they called it Black Panther: Wakanda Forever because it feels like it will never get to the end credits.

I need to break my run of poor movies- maybe it's time for a re-watch of the excellent and thoroughly delightful The Banshees Of Inisherin

The Old Way (2023)

An old gunslinger (Nicolas Cage on first Western flick!) and his daughter must face the consequences of his past, when the son of a man he murdered years ago arrives to take his revenge...

Brian Viner from Daily Mail (UK) wrote: "The best that can be said for The Old Way is that there’s only just over an hour and a half of it."

Couldn't agree more with him! The movie falls back on a series of clichés and the relative safety of its formulaic plot.

Save yourself 95 minutes and go out for a walk. ;)

So I have to be careful here how much I say as this is a whodunnit/whydunnit murder mystery movie. For instance I chose this short teaser trailer as some of the others maybe (maybe not) give a bit too much away. What I can say is that, although I did enjoy this, I enjoyed the first Knives Out more and maybe this would have benefitted from a little bit more editing, particularly in the first hour. Once or twice early on I found myself thnking "...this makes no sense..." but maybe it would at a 2nd watch as next time around I will know all about the reveals; lies & red herrings.

I wonder if Daniel Craig is regretting playing Benoit Blanc with that accent as if they continue with this franchise he's stuck with it now. Performance-wise he, David Bautista and Edward Norton are all full on - I have to admit I don't know much about the other cast members.

Another freezing cold afternoon with over two and a half hours to fill so time for another look at this

Esnes erom tol a edam hctaw dnoces siht, This second watch made a lot more sense. One of the things I found problematic on the 1st watch was that several bits of dialogue was lost against all the background noise and as much of the dialogue is giving details that you really need to try and follow the convoluted forwards/backwards time jumping plot but as I had (sort of) grasped most of it from before it was a bit easier this time around.

So this evening it was back to Inisherin. A dark but at times funny tale told slowly and beautifully. The cast are all on the top of their game and, as you can see from the clip the cinematography is excellent

Liam Neeson is a family man, he drives a snow plough for a living... but when gangsters kill his son he goes into full-on slappy; punchy; shooty; stabby; strangley killing mode - so no type casting there for Liam LOL.

Given it's high number of Oscar nominations I thought I'd better give it a look. It's a very powerful viseral anti-war film, gripping and at times gut wrenching. A minor downside was I found the soundtrack a little jarring at times and I thought maybe the movie was a little too long. A good film - but it wouldn't get my vote for Best Picture. ;)

Ahhh the male bonding; the top notch cast; those wisecracks; the awesome on-screen aerial dog-fights; the quotable lines; the heartbreaking moments; the soundtrack etc etc - they don't make 'em like this anymore.....
