I avoid manipulative behaviours, unless there is some covert action on the part of the other guy that attempts to manipulate me - then I just send it back with a smile.

Never thought about doing it. I've had others try to do this but it was so obvious that I could barely stifle a chuckle. Mothers are notorious for this behavior.

The best response is , as always, the direct one. As in " What are you trying to do? ...manipulate me ...(optional) through guilt"?

I hate manipulation. That is the main reason I am unsuitable for politics.

Even in this imperfect world, you would be quite suitable for local level school board trusteeship, local civic politics, perhaps as a member of some board of oversight, if they have those in your country. Generally (based on my North American average city), local level politics are quiet and serene, unless a civic official screws up. I serve on the school board and on the police services board, and am welcomed for the moderating influence I bring to those meetings. Didn't have to run an election campaign or buy drinks for anyone, just proposed my name, attached a good CV/résumé, and in due course was asked to speak in front of various citizen groups and answer a few questions about how I viewed my participation. I did, they apparently liked what they saw and heard, and here I am.

Whether we're out to the public or not, we gay men need to take active roles whenever possible in our society. At the very least, we can present a voice of moderation when things seem to shift too far to one side.

I agree, that there is nothing wrong with that. I had several times a function in local organisations. But my goal was never power (in fact they always asked me to fulfill the job). In politics the main goal is always power.
