There is a local music shop down the street that I try to patronize. If I want something immediately I get it from Amazon.

The internet: blogs, torrents, p2p (soulseek).

Haven't bought an actual cd in ages. Instead I've been selling off the rest of what I physically own over the past year and change.

It depends.

Some of the music I like is stuff I have only found out about through word of mouth and is not easily available in record shops, so I'll buy it online. That may mean Amazon or CDnow, but is more likely to be one of the small online retailers who specialise in the music genre in question.

When I buy over the counter, there are a couple of very good shops in town with pretty extensive range. If I feel like it I may check the prices online and compare with over-the-counter; however unless the online saving is huge I prefer to deal with the shops because I really want them to stay open.

I always cast an eye over the budget CD racks in stores that I visit, and often pick up something that was in the back of my mind for some time but which I never got around to buying. The latest one of these was the Bob Marley album, Survival.

Independent record stores or amazon.com
I prefer physically owning the cd. Look at liner notes and what not.

It depends..sometimes it CDNow or Amazon. However, just last week while doing some Christmas shopping, the store had a lot of new CDs on sale for $9.99..so, I brought six of them for the first time in such a long time..because usually, I buy downloads.

I think the possession of the song file is enough.. the CD is more of a waste of resource.. (no offence to people who like having CDs)
anyway, I get my music from the net!

That's why there is a small but growing number of musicians who are working hard on bringing back the idea of a total package that you will want to own. Not just the CD with the music on it, but an attractive case with some sort of interesting information about the band or the music - possibly a listing of the lyrics, maybe some photography or artwork that is in some way related to the material on the album.

It's true - if all you get is a crummy looking cover with a track listing on the back, you may as well go the download route instead. When I think back on those albums that are considered classics, such as Jethro Tull's Thick As a Brick, or Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, it's impossible to think of them just in terms of the music; the packaging was an integral part of the appeal.

i used to rock soulseek pretty hard back in the day; it was the best for finding those 'hidden treasure' albums. but i find blogs are the easiest. when you find a good one that shares the same taste in music, you're eyes are opened to lots of new interesting bands.

I have tons, and I mean ton,s of CDs. I am kind of ocd and have to have the cases so usually I buy the CDs if I really don't want all the songs i'll buy the songs on iTunes to at least have hd covers... I only download illegally every once in a while or if I can't spare the few extra bucks for the cd/single or if it hasn't been released yet. I prolly have over 500+ cds in their cases. I love collecting them :]] Also my vinyl records... I love music and it's different formats.

from iTunes only.
and for the very unusual case I don't find something, I ask Mr. Google to "borrow" me a mp3 version of the song :) He's the best.

I'm the same way but my love for music is so vast, I couldn't afford to buy all the albums I want. I probably download $500 worth of music every month, no exaggeration. One day I hope to own all my favorites though.
