Where were you when the OJ Simpson verdict was announced? When the Challenger disaster was announced? When you first heard of the 3 Mile Island or Chernobyl disaster? How about when Lennon was shot? Or the shootings of Pope John or Ronald Reagan? Or Marting Luther King?

Some that come to mind for me:

1969 moon landing -- my dad was cleaning the fish tank and mom was at the hospital getting ready to bring me a brother. I was 2. Damn, I asked for a sister or a puppy and I really wanted the puppy.

July 27, 1974: Articles of Impeachment against Richard Nixon announced -- I remember seeing that on the news and going into the kitchen to ask mom, "What does impeachment mean?" She dropped a glass in the sink and shouted, "What? Oh shit!" I thought she was upset about the glass until she explained impeachment.

Summer 1977: Anita Bryant and the "Save Our Children" campaign -- The former Miss America threw her support behind the Dade County, Florida, effort to repeal a sexual-orientation anti-discrimination ordinance. I recall asking my parents, "Who is Anita Bryant and why doesn't she mind her own business?"

May 21, 1979: the "Twinkie Defense" and San Francisco 'White Night Riots' -- When I saw footage of the blocks and blocks of people carrying candles to protest Dan White's acquittal of double-murder I thought it was beautiful and sad at the same time...but wasn't quite sure (yet) why it was so important to me.

The Challenger disaster -- I was walking through the Student Union at the University of Tennessee and noticed everyone gathered around the TVs. 'Oh, another space shuttle launch,' I thought. Then the phrase, "Go with throttle up...."

OJ Verdict- I was in my 5th grade gifted class, and our teacher had a TV tuned to the coverage.

9/11- That was a club day in my HS, and since MAΘ was a short meeting, I went back to trig. Since that class was almost empty, the TV was tuned to CNN, and I had walked in after the first tower had been hit. Most of us were wondering how in the hell you accidentally hit a building that size in broad daylight. Then the second plane struck, and we understood nothing about this was accidental.

1969 moon landing: I was a little boy back then... But still can remember it, days before rumour started around the village that somebody would step on the moon from a big rocket, back then there was only 1 TV in the village where I lived, so when me and my brother and our friends came to the community center where that TV was, the community center was packed already even with people standing outside and leaning in the windows, so we did not see it "life" but it made a huge impression on me!

9/11: I was at home teaching (as a vollunteer I teach "foreigners" the Dutch language) when a friend called me and said I had to put on the TV, when I and my student watched the special TV coverage we saw ("life coverage") the second plane hit one of the towers, we were amazed. But frankly I would like to have seen the first steps on the moon "life" on TV...

March 20, 2004, (former) Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, Princess of Oranje-Nassau, Dutchess of Mecklenburg, Princess of Lippe-Biesterfeld died of pneumonia. When I heard this tragic news (Queen Juliana was more then a Queen, she was like a mother and grandmother for most Dutch people including new residents) I was in a TRAIN, the train stopped just outside the city of Haarlem, the lights in the train were switched off and a voice on the train intercom announced this tragic news.

I was seven years old in 1953. Together with my parents I heard the news on the radio (we didn't have tv in those days). The St. Ignatius Flood had killed many people (1800) and more than 100.000 people had lost their homes. A terrible tragedy.
But little things for the world, things of actual no importance for the world, are the real tragedies in life. I visited today my brother in law in a hospital. He is suffering of cancer and his situation is really bad now. It made me realize that the real big moments in my life were when my parents died. I was there, both times. So I could hold their hands when they passed away.

My first news memory is the Challenger blowing up - I don't remember where I was the moment it blew up - but I remember the whole family huddled around the BBC news on a really crappy old telly.

I guess 9/11 is the biggest "where were you when" of my life so far - it was the day before my graduation and I was on campus in the university. Officially the Students' Union Bar was closed, but the management opened it up to put Sky News on the big projector - there were hundreds of students in there staring at the TV utterly dumb-founded. I was sitting on the pool table because there were no more seats.
