As Les Paul said, you can never say someone is the greatest, because they all have different styles and different ways their great. Some are great technical players, hitting every note with precision, while others are great impromptu players making it up as they go along.

Eddie VanHalen is one of the best rock guitarist in the world, but when he went head to head with an an old country boy named Chet Atkins, he found out that he couldn't keep up with a Bluegrass man.

And to be truthful, when someone like Hendrix is lost so tragically, we all remember them as being better than they really were, not that he wasn't one of the greats. And he didn't play upside down, he was left handed, and because they didn't make left handed Telecasters, he had a right handed one strung upside down to make it left handed...

My musician friends tell me they think it's Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits et. al) - but what do I know - I like operas, tecno (dance, trance, ambience) - not much guitar there .....

Having grown up in bluegrass country...New Jersey...and since brmstn69 so accurately pointed out the incredible talent of Chet Atkins...I vote for either Doc Watson, the amazing and blind bluegrass purist whose flat and finger picking just blows you away or Clarence White, early of the Kentucky Colonels and later of The Byrds, who was way ahead of his time (at least in bluegrass) and whose command of the fretboard made Jimi Hendrix seem slow. (Not to diminish Jimi's great talent). Just felt like being different....

Far too many, and far too many different styles. It's an impossible question for me.

What about Link Wray or Dick Dale ? Or maybe Hank Marvin of "The Shadows" here in England? Duane Eddy, Jerry Cole, heck the list can go ooooooooooooooon ;)

It all depends on styles. But for me the absolute greatest ever is Andres Segovia.

Hendrix is good, Malmsteen is also great [Adagio interpreted by Malmsteen is awesome], Vai is good, Santana is good... but tell me one guitarist who can play that part from Queen`s Innuendo better than Steve Howe ...? I don`t know if he`s THAT good but the flamenco solo in Innuendo just beats it all :) Or ...maybe the guitar solo fom A Tale that wasn`t right -Helloween ...the guitarist...I forgot his name ;) ANyways, there are so many great guitarists...you can`t choose ONE!

Personally, I thought the best part of Innuendo was the electric Flamenco, played through a distortion box, i'm just not sure if it was Steve Howe who played 1st guitar or Brian May who was playing it...

But if you want to talk Flamenco, one of the best is Steve Stevens, who is best known for playing with Billy Idol...

Steve Howe indeed :) I always thought it was May who did it but after a bit of research via dear old internet...everyone says it is Howe who interpreted the flamenco solo.

Its hard to say.
My favourite guitarists are: Slash, Adrian Smith, Jimmy Page, K.K Downing, Glenn Tipton, Mathiass Jabs and many others.
