I honestly do read Poe and Shakespeare in leisure time lol. They are fun to read. I have complete anthologies of Poe and Shakespeare BUT I can never find the "come little children" poem that they say that haunting song from Hocus Pocus is based off of.

Can't pin it down to just one...so

Tom Sharpe, Phillip Pullman, Kurt Vonegurt Jr, Douglas Adams,William Sutcliffe, Iain Banks

Terry Pratchett..the joy that is Discworld

Christopher Brookmeyer for great sardonic crime novels

Clive Barker for the most gut wrenching, spine-chilling horror..

Joseph Heller..Catch-22,

Mervyn Peake...for Goremengast

Rohinton Mistry..for A Fine Balance,

and last but by no means least Patrick Suskind...for Perfume

Come little children I'll take thee away
into a land of Enchantment

Come little children the time's come to play
here in my garden of Shadows

Follow sweet children I'll show thee the way
through all the pain and the Sorrows

Weep not poor children for life is this way
murdering beauty and Passions

Hush now dear children it must be this way
to weary of life and Deceptions

Rest now my children for soon we'll away
into the calm and the Quiet

Come little children I'll take thee away
into a land of Enchantment

Come little children the time's come to play
here in my garden of Shadows

Some say its by Poe...but there is no evidence apparently

Used to love Stephen King, but that was some time ago, others from the past I read a lot of were Robert Heinlein , Philip K Dick, Iain Banks, and the master of science fiction, Isaac Assimov.

I then moved on and read the likes of Larry McMurtry (who wrote the Lonesome Dove series which was very succesfully and loyally televised, mainly because he had a hand in the production). WELL worth reading, his style is so good you can hear the guys spit!!

Another recommended author is Lorenzo Carcaterra - he has written some fabulous stuff, loved everything I've read of his.

I've read so much over the years I've actually forgotten a lot. One author I will never read again is Dan Brown - sorry , but utter crap!!

I've also read a load of classics in my past simply because I wanted to, like Emile Zola or (and I can't spell this :p ) Dosteyevsky , but one clasic that still sticks in my mind which I had to read at school is Dickens' Great Expectations. I'd never have read it if I didn't have to, but really glad I did, excellent book.

(Charles Dickens, although looked on as a "classic" these days was in fact the soap opera writer of his day and most of his stuff was published weekly in chapters in magazines!)

I still am into the Stephen King area LOL:) I tried reading Dunes saga once but never finished it... dunno why..:) Koontz is on the second place. and the third one is Agatha Christie....

@ xman Great Expectations is a great book!

Another great book i`ve read 12 or more times is Sans Famille AKA Nobody`s Boy by Hector Malot. My God, that book made me wanna cry everytime I`ve read it... Oh, and I remember Cuore by Edmondo de Amicis...and of course the twisted In The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco

Wow, there are some really dark authors here. I too really have a thing for ian banks, but I'm dead into romance novels and my favororite author is johanna lindsey. I've read most of her books more than once. But my favorite book is Moby Dick. The hidden Man on Man relationships were really hot and each time I read it again, I find something awesome.

My all time fav would have to be Vikram Seth... A Suitable Boy is incredible and a work of art.
He has also written an entire novel in rhyming verse... i forget the name.
Also a huge fan of Salman Rushdie (Midnight's children, shalimar the clown, the enchantress of florence being some of my faves)
Jeffrey Archer too :D
and of course JK Rowling :D... sorry, couldnt help it! The fact that the mental images of harry look life daniel radcliffe also contribute...lol

Hey Prinz..if you luv Rushdie and Seth I wholeheartedly suggest you get hold of "A Fine Balance " by Rohinton Mistry..a phenomenal work set in Mumbai and following the intertwining lives of 4 individuals from different ends of the caste system...at times overwhelmingly sad, shocking but uplifting ..it will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.
