really why? There are so many of them out there..is it a fatal-ism to get involved in any of them., like some -ism are safe, others not?

ok i explain how i understand it..i'm no clever either
~ism, the suffix ~ism attached at the end of 'specific' words, like a tail :p it becomes a notion set into motion, sometimes linked with behavior and attitude like racism, sexism...

What i wanted to know is why the general caution toward any ~ism, ok there are obvious ones you don't won't get involved into, like slimjim gave examples of some with negative connotation. Are to be wary of every word attached with ~ism?

: philosophy phd student mode on:

imho "-isms" are always to be handled with care. They all imply a generalisation and presume that you can achieve a global perspective on the phaenomenon that you're trying to describe. Moreover it's always risky to deal with general labels, because they tend to absorb the differences of the singular cases. But as long as one is aware of these issues, there's no reason why general nouns, and -isms in particular, shouldn't be used. Their explanatory power is usually low but abstraction is a risk one should be willing to take, at least when you're doing "theory"/science/philosophy.

Well spoken. Take for example masochism. How the hell can a masochist harm others than himself?
