According to the leaks France's Presidents, cabinet ministers and other officials have been secretly monitored by the NSA.

I wonder do they gather information that can be used to blackmail french politicians... in case bribes and brown-envelopes aren't enough?

What should France do to protect it's independence and its interests when targeted in this way by a much larger country, a super-power?

Will the US reign itself in, or engage in even more aggressive and expansive spying in the future?

And you have so many more resources you can do it so much better than most countries - you are the only superpower on the planet!

The French are probably doing their own spying on other big nations, but do you really think Ireland has the ability to spy back at the US? Or little Belgium?

Obviously we're not that good at it, we keep getting caught...

And considering that most intelligence gathering is done by electronic surveillance, yes I do believe even tiny little Ireland is spying right back at us. A single, talented geek sitting at a computer terminal is worth a thousand James Bonds and Jason Bournes...

That's very kind of you to say, but you sooooooooo over-estimate the Irish government's technical abilities

You think America is bad at spying because they get caught, I think the Irish are so bad at spying they never even get caught, because they never get anywhere!

You must be thinking about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, TTIP, which is due to signed between Europe and America.
It puts the rights of multinational corporations above those of individual governments. Since every multinational has a presence in America, the corporations are going to be unable to resist passing on any information the US gov cares to ask for, including from all the European countries in which they operate, ie all of them.
