Perhaps and only perhaps one can understand Russia but K A T A R?????? Tell me what football has to do with Katar? Europe and South-America there are the football (or soccer if you want?!) countries of this world. Not the Arabian part of the world! And think of the temperatures. When they should play? And where? In an iced ample hall? What a giant nonsens. But again a Blatter-madness!!!

There is a trend for these big events. Olympics, World Cup.
They are very expensive to pull off.

Where there is democracy, it's a tough sell. Local people who have a say are more and more saying NO! Spend the money on other things.
Boston has an Olympic bid committee. Smart, high profile people. They're getting a skeptical response.

So it's either places that have most of the infrastructure built already. Or places that have money and a population who can't say no. China, Russia, Qatar.

The only good thing about Qatar? The heat will make the boys play naked, sweaty futball.

p:p p:p  Tonka you are really the greatest. That must have been the reason why FIFA gave it to Katar! Why I couldn't find it for myself? Whow - so I can't await the opening in Katar!

Yes, they are getting more and more expensive but most European countries would be able to do that without having to build new arenas. Germany in 2006 was very happy to have the WM and also South-Africa in 2010 could use it for good publicity.

I think the problem here is the FIFA. Too much corruption there. Katar didn't make it because the democracies were not willing, it got it because of bribe. South-Korea, Australia and the USA wanted to have it too. The USA could use some good publicity too.

I wouldn't say SLOWLY! Soccer becomes the ''second most popular'' sport in the USA (if you look at TV figures)!

Across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC audiences for the matches thus far in the 2014 World Cup are up by 50 percent from those for the last World Cup, in South Africa in 2010. So far, the games have averaged 4.3 million viewers, up from 2.8 million in 2010. The highest of those matches was the U.S. vs. Portugal game at 18.22 million viewers. Germany's 1-0 extra time win over Argentina is the most-watched soccer game in American history!

I was very surprised at the interest this year.

Four years ago, it was my Dad's birthday. My friend and I took him out to a
local bar and grill. It was a typical light Sunday crowd. We didn't even know it was the World Cup finals. We watched the game with the other twenty people.

This year, all the bars were overflowing for many games. People were watching games at work, on the ellipticals at the gym. Everywhere.

Hello Tonka - so you are from the USA?! Well after all reading these posts here I must say - perhaps I'm laboured under the misapprehension and football will conquer the whole world. And perhaps you my have right that these championship has created the big break or perhaps too coach Klinsmann (from Germany:blushing:). It's a great sport and it's connecting rich and poor, educated and common people. And all are coaches - here in Germany we have had nearly 80 million's of them ;). So Tonka if you really are living in the USA and you have watched really these championship you really are more than likeable to me. An American who come to love football - GREAT! p:p And please forgive potential mistakes of grammar or orthography in my text. I love you p:p

Like Futball? I like the sport, and all the fun. It helped that I found my soccer crush. The chubby one. His charming name, his beauty, his play, his demeanor...it gave me a hook.

Am I watching soccer next month, next year? No.

Basketball is my sport. I played it. I t understand it. I love it.

@ Shelter & haiducii & everybody else...
If the US of A COULD host a Soccer WC in 2018 or 2022??????

I'm pretty confused...Really, how old are you boys? 15? 17?
But you must know, that the US already hosted the Soccer WC and it happened in the glorious summer of 1994! The US as hosts did just splendid and the year was glorious, in particular because Sweden - and I'm swedish - won the Bronze medal!

Congratulation Gorgik9 for the third place in 1994. And I know too that the German team lost 1:2 against Bulgaria in the quarterfinal. But as Tonka said "Am I watching soccer next month, next year? No!" That's what I mean it is not the mass sport in the USA. No one said the American cannot be good hosts for such an event. But I think the WC of football should be in Europe or South-America where football (and not soccer) is a most beloved mass sport.
I know too American Football, Baseball and Basketball - and everyone of these sports is fascinating and great - but at least in Europe these sports are minorities as well as football in the USA.
And I'm 26 (nearly 27 -:))

Thanks Shelter:)
I think your views on what countries should or shouldn't host the WC is a bit too static; and I think the big, serious problem is and will be the very nasty thing called corruption - corruption on FIFA:s behalf and corruption on behalf of the hosting nation.
I'm so fuckin' old that I remember when West-Germany - yes WEST-Germany - hosted and won the WC in 1974. It was the first WC tournament that I followed...I was 14 years old and a very avid wanker in the midst of everything else...

If America did host again, we have some cities where the finals would be insane (in a good way).
Maybe Miami? Or it may be too humid.
How about Los Angeles. One of the great melting pot cities of the Pacific, and movie stars! And porn stars!
