In the Sunday newspaper in one of our our many sophisticated "ask and answer" columns, M.F Stubbs from Silver Spring, Maryland asked "does nodding one's head up and down mean "yes" in all cultures? and "if shaking one's head from side to side always means no in all cultures?"
"Ask Marilyn" replied, "Neither is universal. In parts of Eastern Europe and the Middle East, their meanings are just the opposite." She also claims that "in our culture, we often say goodbye by facing the palm outward, and waving the hand side to side. To many Europeans, that simply means no" (Actually, while waving the hand does mean goodbye to me, it also means no if I'm moving my head back and forth at the same time.)
Anyhozzle, sound right to you Europeans, Middle Easterners? What does a nod or a shake mean to you?
