Hey Guys:
I have a problem that once I think it has been resolved, it comes back with no previous resolutions that were promised to me each time this problem occurred. Allow me to explain my situation and I welcome any advice that would be helpful to permanently taking care of this problem.
Back in 2007, I enrolled in college to further my education with hopes of obtaining a degree since I had to decline the opportunity of receiving a full scholarship after finishing high school. To my surprise, I had done far better than I had anticipated by being on the Dean's List every term since I've enrolled. However, due to some unfortunate cirstances, I had to take a year off which was the year of 2009. However, once I felt I was ready to pursue my education again, I re-enrolled in school. Upon that enrollment, I was told by the Academic Advisor that since I've done so well before dropping out, that since I changed my major, I would be awarded credit for a whole year which left me with two and a half years to complete. Again, I had done exceptionally well each and every term and was informed by a new Academic Advisor around September of 2010 upon registering classes for the upcoming term that I've done so well that the school had decreased my completion date to May 2011. Because of my paranoia of not being very trusting, I asked the AA three times to confirm this information which she did and wrote it down in my journal. Not only did I write this date on my calendar and in my journal, I also told my friends and a couple of relatives this news because I was so excited. However, when it came to again to register for another term, the previous AA had left the university and I was assigned some one new. After registering new courses, I had inquired to this new AA when was my graduation date. Her response was that her records indicated that I was graduating in October 2013.
I had gotten so upset with this information and begin to explain to her what I was told by the previous AA and how I doented this information and asking her three times to repeat it. She explained that the previous AA had misinformed me and she apologized for this mistake. To say the least, I did not settle well with this and requested to have the contact information of the Dean or the President of the university which she declined to give. After several unfortunate attempts of trying obtain this information, I finally spoke with a technical advisor who happen to give me the contact information of the Assistant Dean's office. After contacting his office, I was not given the opportunity to discuss my problem with him in person or over the phone. Therefore, I decided to e-mail him explaining the situation in detail.
A few days later which was the eve of Thanksgiving 2010, he contacted me via phone that evening and explained that the AA who had given me the earlier graduation information had misinformed me and that he apologized on their behalf and although he understood how I felt in regard to this individual giving out appropriate information to me as a student because this is whom I would contact in regard to my classes, grades, and graduation, that this individual is human and is allowed to make mistakes. In fact, he offered no kind of compromise for their mistake and even suggested that if I decided to transfer to another university, he would understand.
A week later, I received a letter from the Office of Academic Affairs stating that my graduation date would be moved up to August of 2012. I decided to let it go and focus on doing well in order to graduate with a successful grade point average upon completion. From this point on, what I noticed is that each student has a degree plan designed just for them and I noticed that each term that I received a Dean's List certificate, my graduation date moved up to an earlier date. Now mind you, I kept copies of every piece of doentation and e-mails in a folder in regard to this situation over time and what I noticed over the past year is that no matter how well I did after the completion of a term, my graduation date was moved back to October, 2013. Again, I contacted the Office of Academic Affairs in this regard and was informed that there was a technical problem with the degree plan system and to ignore the date that was mentioned on the plan.
From the beginning of 2011, I continued to make the Dean's List every term. In fact, I had done so well that I was awarded a certificate from the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for achieving an outstanding grade point average for every year since my enrollment with the University. However, in December 2011, I was contacted by the office to check the status of my degree plan because the system had been fixed. Unfortunately, my graduation date was again pushed back to October, 2013. Once I notified the office with this problem, I did not receive a response until earlier this week and again I was informed that this information was correct.
Now, with all of that being said, I am extremely upset and giving great consideration of seeking legal representation because I beginning to believe that this school was not expecting me to do so well and is screwing around with my degree plan in order to get more money out of me. Do any of you guys have any recommendations, suggestions, or advice on how to handle this, I would be greatly appreciative.
I thank you in advance for taking time out to read this.
Respectfully,
