After 14 Years, 'Jacob' No Longer Top Boy Baby Name
By Newser Editors and Wire Services

IT'S REPLACED BY 'NOAH,' WHILE 'SOPHIA' REIGNS AGAIN FOR GIRLS

Social Security Administration's list of the most popular baby names, released today. The rest of the top 5 for boys:

(NEWSER) – Noah sailed past Jacob to become the most popular baby name for boys in 2013, ending Jacob's 14-year run at the top. Sophia was the most popular baby name for girls for the third straight year, according to the Social Security Administration's list of the most popular baby names, released today.

The rest of the top 5 for boys:
Liam
Jacob
Mason
William

And for girls:
Emma
Olivia
Isabella
Ava

Social Security also charts the fastest-rising names each year. For girls, the runaway winner was Daleyza, which jumped a whopping 3,130 spots, to No. 585. For boys, the fastest rising name was Jayceon, which jumped 845 spots, to No. 206.

This speaks volumes about about American society and culture.

It also makes me a little nostalgic.

Sniffit :)

I know a Sophie, and an Olivia.

The Olivia I know was just in the news. She's 7, and lives in suburban Boston. She was in the yard; her Dad went across the street to pick up some trash. Olivia ran out to join him. Hit by a car. Medflighted to Boston. Swollen brain; no movement.
But...she's 7. She bounced back. She's home. She's fine.

Beautiful, classic names for boys.

America is drifting away from it's traditional heritage - far, far away - as suggested by the 'fastest rising' names: Jayceon & Daleyza

Many names people use to introduce themselves to me these days are not only ridiculously unpronouncable for me - they themselves have trouble pronouncing them but then again diction seems irrelevant in the illiterate climate that our public education system had produced the past 20 years.

American culture has become a joke in my humble opinion. It just doesn't seem to matter today.

When I lived in Boston, I overheard a conversation between two women about names, and one of them said- without a shred of irony or sarcasm- that her younger sister was constantly traumatized because people kept mispronouncing her name. And I quote:

"Her name's Dahna but people keep calling her Donna."

You may have to have lived in the New England region to fully appreciate this, but I laughed my ass off. And then I cried.

Donna is a working class name. All the talk about America being a classless society...just one of our myths.
Donna will work at Wallmart, or, if she's lucky, as a bus driver on the T.

Dahna will work from home, blogging about the latest cafes on the waterfront.

And just to add...Donna will have a real Boston accent.

Do we think the "new" name Jayceon is pronounced just like the very old name Jason? Or is it another case of Donna/Dahna? :)

Tis a pity that the parents get to choose the name then the kid has to live with the fallout. In my ideal world your baby name would be temporary until you were old enough to choose your own name. David Bowie's son was originaly known as Zowie Bowie, but he also had the option of reverting to the name Duncan Jones. Can you guess which name he chose to use once he was old enough to realise how stupid Zowie sounded?
A woman I knew was a big fan of Jennifer Lopez so she called her little daughter Jaylo. The kid wasn't a fan though, now she's stuck with an embarrassing handle.
