ALL UK air flights grounded!!

A very unique occasion, a volcano in Iceland has erupted after 200 years and spread ash, which is likened to talcam powder and undectectable, all across Scandinavia and over the UK.

From the BBC -

Airline passengers are facing massive disruption across the UK after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland grounded planes.

The Air Traffic Control Service (Nats) said no flights would be allowed in or out of UK airspace until 1800BST amid fears of engine damage.

The restrictions were imposed after the Met Office warned the ash was sufficient to clog engines.

Passengers were also affected in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark.

Last time this volcano erupted it lasted 2 years !! This could cause huge ongoing problems!

They've now provisionally moved the time up to 1pm tomorrow afternoon before anything can fly again! Looking at the situation I think that's optimistic.

I think I heard that the USA has now cut the flights to Europe in half .

The power of nature!! You can never underestimate it !

Apparently it's throwing up some glass-like substance up, which shuts down plane engines. So maybe it's just as well!

[DOOM] [GLOOM] And well yeah, there's a lot of thought that it's gonna re-erupt and more heavily, and that the bigger, badder sister volcano (which my Icelandic friend tells me) always tends to erupt alongside this one that's having a go right now.

Darker days to come I think [/DOOM] [/GLOOM]

Now they also closed airports in northern Germany.
And meteorologists already said that most likely over the weekend they'll have to close Frankfurt too.

Who would have believed this?

No airtraffic over Europe due to a volcano eruption on Iceland

You mean this isn't reported in America?? Heathrow is the world's busiest airport and if that's disrupted it affects everywhere.

Latest I heard it'll be at least 7pm now Friday night before anything moves!

It'll take days to get the planes back in the right places even when it does clear.

You need to tune your tv to BBC World ;)

Oh, no it's been on the news here!! I heard about it last night.
The reason planes can't fly through it, is because the dust cloud has bits of glass, and they melt in the jets engines, stopping them.

But we also had another great event last night.
A huge meteor came to earth. It was seen in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin. It was huge!!
People were "freaking out" thinking it was a UFO!!
I saw a video of it that was recorded by a police car in Iowa, as it's burning up it takes up a huge portion of the sky.
Last I heard they are still searching in Wisconsin where they believe it came down.

I heard about it from my mother, a British friend of hers was visiting Scotland and managed to get on the very last flight back to Britain before flights were canceled. I understand that it was a VERY scary flight...

Hurricanes, floods, typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes, ice-storms, volcano's, tornadoes, etc...

Anyone else starting to think that the countdown to 2012 has begun...X_X

Someone mentioned about the Mayen calendar on the news last night :p Load of rubbish of course, this is a perfectly natural phenomenon. It seems to erupt about every 200 years, last time was 1800s, before that was 1600s.
A few planes are moving in Scotland, but very few. The main ban is not now provisionally going to be lifted until 1am Saturday morning (BST).

Saw the meteor clip on the news! That looked awesome! I'd love to witness something like that. I've never even seen a basic meteotite shower!

I saw that video too, unfortunately I live a mere 150 km east of where it was visible :( But here in corn country (the mid-west) we have clear skies and get to see meteor showers all the time. :) I remember a particularly good one a couple of years ago that I saw while at the drive-in theater. Great show, but I missed half the movie :p

It was the Matrix 3, so I really didn't miss much...

Been pushed back to early Saturday morning for the flights now. Man, a band I know were supposed to start a US tour yesterday too. Feel so bad for them (because they're only just making a dent in the US market).

Also, the meteorite is nuts. You'd have thought they'd have seen that coming and told us or something!

Latest on UK air space is the no-fly is extended to 18:00 GMT Saturday ... with no indication that the situation is likely to improve.. in fact the ban that had been lifted from N. Ireland and Scotland has been re-imposed.

And the volcano shows no signs of calming down yet
.............................................

Update ... UK airspace now closed until at least 01:00 am Sunday.

They're thinking this could go on another 4 or 5 days, but nobody can predict.

Quantas have suspended all flights to Europe too.

This has a knock-on effect, it's not just holiday makers who will suffer. We import a lot of veggies from Africa which have short shelf lives and are sitting there , probably now deteriorating. We'll find shortages in the shops soon of certain items, not to mention the waste of food!

Also important human organs are transported by air, so any medical emergency will become a serious situation!

Just shows how much we're so used to modern technology. The people who directly live under the flight paths, however, are the ones feeling happy at the moment, after a plane going over every 90 seconds they are enjoying the peace and quiet and can actually hear the birds again!

@garth Nah they're a band called Los Campesinos. Not many have heard of them sadly :(.

And yeah, I occasionally get planes go over where I am, and it's been bliss lately. Now I only have the cars and the tube to contend with :))
