Hmmm the UK looks a lot more clear than it did on another map I saw on the BBC site. A little more promising I guess!

They're thinking this could go on another 4 or 5 days, but nobody can predict.

Quantas have suspended all flights to Europe too.

This has a knock-on effect, it's not just holiday makers who will suffer. We import a lot of veggies from Africa which have short shelf lives and are sitting there , probably now deteriorating. We'll find shortages in the shops soon of certain items, not to mention the waste of food!

Also important human organs are transported by air, so any medical emergency will become a serious situation!

Just shows how much we're so used to modern technology. The people who directly live under the flight paths, however, are the ones feeling happy at the moment, after a plane going over every 90 seconds they are enjoying the peace and quiet and can actually hear the birds again!

Be thankfull you are not in need.

German Kanler Merkel had to stop in Portugal, when she was coming back from the United States. So it has at least something good, lol
And if it just give a break for one day, lol

As can be seen it's not getting any better.

Latest... UK airspace now closed until at least 13:00 am GMT Sunday.

As for transporting transplant organs, you need not worry...

There is always a plan B...

While mainly used for catching speeding Ferrari's and Porsche's, this Lamborghini Gallardo is also equipped for medical emergencies, complete with defibrillator equipment, which performs electrocardiograms and automatic diagnoses of arterial pressure and the presence of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood – as well as a refrigerated compartment for the transportation of plasma and human organs for transplants.

No, but there are ferries and if I'm not mistaken a tunnel under the sea from France to England...

And then there's plan C...

:p

Interesting thought! I've been wondering that too. Won't affect me personally too much but we'd have to get used to growing food locally again!

Latest news - Ash cloud is now approaching the East Coast of America !!

Some are complaining that the aviation authorities have been over cautious. Obviously they'd rather risk lives than profits!

Latest signs are tentatively encouraging, but the big worry now is the neighbouring volcano. That will possibly cause even more disruption if that goes off !

As an aside, it just shows the nasty mercenary side of some people profiteering. There are many stories of hotel rates all around the world suddenly increasing overnight! One guy I just saw interviewed stranded in Hong Kong found the hotel doubling its rate from around the equivalent of 400 euros to 800 a day!

Disasters bring out the best and also, sadly, the worst in human nature!

I wonder how people would cope if they were told they could not fly for say a month, or three months... say there was some pollutant that interfered with electrics on large transport vehicles, potentially, or something.... so even boats were not allowed to sail, except for emergencies or VIP's/diplomats. To be stuck in one location essentially. How would people react?

Your not just talking about being stuck, you have to remember that also means no goods can be transported. No fuel for cars, no coal for power plants, no power to purify and pump water, etc. We'd suddenly be thrust back into the 1800's...X_X

Personally, I'd like it.:) A little chaos is good, it reminds people of whats important and that wealth and power have their limits. I grew up poor, not so bad off that we had to hunt or grow our own food to survive, but poor enough that we learned how just in case;) And I do have some family that are that poor, they do hunt for meat and grow their own vegetables. Collectively between us, my family and friends have over 500 acres of forest and farm land with an abundance of wildlife for hunting, several lakes for fishing and fresh water, cattle, horses, pigs, and chickens. And a junkyard full of materials to make our own generators and any other machinery, and the skills to use it. And if all else fails, Amish country is less than an hour drive away, what we don't know they can teach us...:p

Not to mention that most of my family are gun toting ex-military nut jobs, so we also have weapons and the training to protect what we have...
