I have been looking at the non-porn gay movies forum,and I have to say they are quite a lot! Some have movie quality production and am wondering how in hell with so many of them out there do these productions make money and be viable? What sustains the industry? I have never gone to the movies to watch one and I bet neither have a lot of folks.

Some of the shorter films are college projects. The students have access to good semi-pro equipment so the picture quality is indistinguisable from a commercial production on a laptop screen. The actors and crew are working free as part of their own courses so the films costs almost nothing to make.
That accounts for some of this type of film but there are others which obviously have not been made on the cheap. Look carefully in the closing credits and you can usualy see messages about;

There are ways and means to get money for those who hustle hard enough for it.
Some film funding is found by playing games with tax breaks, robbing Peter to pay Paul.
And then a director might make make a movie fully expecting to lose money on it. The aim being to raise his or her profile in order to get profitable big budget work later on.
