I have AVG free antivirus on my laptop and am generally happy with it but a couple of days ago up popped a window saying AVG had new security settings and did I want to apply them so I updated them.

The next time I switched the laptop on I found that an AVG webpage had become my homepage and when I clicked a new tap a blank page opened instead, preventing me from accessing the "in-private browsing" .I went into tools/internet options and reset my old homepage and for new tabs but when I logged in again I was back with the AVG site and a blank pages and no matter how many times I reset my choices and saved them they reverted back to what AVG wanted... very frustrating~X(~X(. In the end I had to un-install AVG and then re-install it to get everything set as I wanted.

Anyone else had the same problems?

If you get a pop-up from AVG think carefully before updating.

during the update process u probably forgot to uncheck that you don't want to have these imho annoying extras from AVG, but you can uninstall these without that you need to remove the whole AVG thingy.

i do use AVG Free since years now on several devices and i'm still good with.

and no... they do not pay me for writing this ;)

Sounds like another example of getting what you pay for.

AVG are a company that need to make money, if you won't pay for their product then they need to annoy you enough to either convince you to buy, or to show you ads that others pay for.

sure it's annoying but if you read what you gonna install then you can avoid it.
most of the freeware has some more or less usefully or annoying adds nowadays, but you can skip these, you just have to look carefully before you click something, thats all.

In this case, if you accidentally installed it: AVG Toolbar and AVG Searchengine can be easily removed manually in your installed app settings.

My AVG don't really update so I'm glad I didn't get this warning. Thanks for the warning though.
