A Bollywood gay character ?

While looking for something else I happened across this from a new(ish) Bollywood movie : Dishoom . The plot seems to be that India's top batsman (cricket) Viraj Sharma has gone missing in Middle East, and two cops must team up for a 36-hours man-hunt before the final match between India and Pakistan. In this scene they go to a playboy's pool party to ask about the last time he saw the missing cricketer .... there is a great line of dialogue right near the end about what someone's father must be

This sort of content is not what I had in mind when anyone says Bollywood

Good for them!

Now how about a big Bollywood musical seduction number between two men.

My receptivity to new art form slammed shut when I reached forty. This just might pry it open just a bit.

Meh, I'm from India, and most of the "modern gay content" in Bollywood is extremely stereotypical and cringe-worthy. It's hard to not wanna punch something when I watch overdramatic attempts to bring gay characters onto the big screen.
They are mostly extra flamboyant, feminized and rather dumb in the long run. Sorry, but that's just my take on it, when i compare it to the Western portrayals.

I know. But the thing is - it's a step. It's a step out from invisibility. No, it's nowhere near good enough, but it is breaking through the "we don't talk about that" shame barrier.

We had a lot of those in the late 1960s / early 1970s in the west. They were seen as a sign of a movie or play being "progressive" or "sophisticated". But it felt like the gay version of blackface. But, again, it was the step away from silence and in to the public view.

It wasn't long before we were telling our own stories. Keep pushing for that in Bollywood - instead of straight people writing their version of what a gay person is, encourage gay people to write and direct put the truth out there.

Question - are there any gay web series from India? That seems to be giving a lot of people a chance to get their work out there over here. You can do just about everything on an iPhone and laptop today that you needed a whole movie studio for in the old days.
