Broke My Foot...

Last night I got home from work and as I was climbing the front steps to my house I realized I was still wearing my driving glasses, which are made for distance but cause issues with depth perception at close distances. So I turned to go back down the steps and put the glasses in my car. Due to the fore mentioned depth perception issues, I missed the last step, fell and broke my foot.

Aside from every bone in my face, I've never broken a bone in my life.

God damn it fucking hurts! With face bones the pain was mild, but a foot, shit that hurts.

To make matters worse, I live upstairs. My house is like a duplex, my mother lives downstairs and I'm upstairs. I have my own kitchen, bath, living area, etc.

But unfortunately, I'm in the middle of upgrading the plumbing. I did the downstairs kitchen and bath for my mother, but there is currently no plumbing upstairs at all.

My mother is in a wheelchair and can't even bring my dinner or a drink up to me so I'm on my own.
Going downstairs every time I need to piss, eat or drink is killing me.~X(

Sounds like a nightmare scenario brmstn. "I feel your pain" - well, not really but the sentiment is sincere :)

I tore some ligaments in my ankle once and it was the most painful experience I've endured so far. I could try to imagine broken bones in my foot but it might bring up phantom sensations of ankle ligament thing so I'll have to forgo that little trip down memory lane, lol.

If it were me I might have to improvise a method to take a piss during my 6 week recovery - you risk another fall with each trip up and down the stairs on a broken foot.

Good luck buddy,

Sniffit :)

I went to the hospital and I'm seeing a specialist tomorrow.

Crane drivers who couldnt come down from the tall cranes would have a bucket on a string so when the sandwich girl came round he sent his money down that way and got his food on the way back up. Just make sure its not the same bucket you had a piss in.

I hope you're at least in a walking cast pretty soon.

I broke my ankle some years ago. My third floor walk up on crutches was not much fun. But I did have plumbing.
I was back to work in two weeks. My work mates did my fetch and carry needs with good humor.

Hang in there. This too shall pass.

Well, I saw the specialist today, my foots broken in two places. I'm off work for 4-6 weeks and I'm in a walking boot, but it doesn't help much. The script for hydrocodone does help though, lol...

All things considered, I'm better off than most would be in the same situation.

As I said before my mother lives downstairs in my house and she's wheelchair bound, so the first floor is completely handicap accessible. There's grab handles in the bathroom, a seat in the shower, etc...

Plus I already have all those little items that come in handy in times like this, like a wheelchair, crutches, canes, grab sticks, etc.

So I've got it all worked out. I have a wheelchair in my car for when I go out. A cane to get from my car to the front door of my house. A rolling desk chair takes me around the first floor to my stairs. A pair of crutches get me up and down the stairs, and then I have another rolling desk chair waiting at the top of the stairs...

I have a bedside commode that my mother had used while I was re-doing her bath downstairs and a makeshift dumbwaiter, meaning a rope tied to a basket thrown over the bannister, for meal deliveries, etc. I still have a fridge, stove, and microwave in the upstairs kitchen for snacks, beverages, and bottled water, just no sink.

Man, I've got it made!!!

Dude, hurting your foot, is fucked up, let me share that i had a fracture in my left foot a little over two years ago, let me tell you what my orthopedist told me.

1. The first six weeks (not a day less) i wasn't allowed to put my foot on the floor, at all, i've heard that people with fractures can walk around with a casting or walking boot, but he told me that since the bones are healing even the tiniest amount of preasure could affect the process, and not in the short term, but as years pass, i could start having problems or pain related to that injury, if i had to move around (and not for long periods) crutches were mandatory. Plus the leg had to be horizontal or higher at all times.

2. After the initial six weeks, i was able to start walking for 10 minute periods (no more) with a walking boot and a cane, after those 10 minutes, put back the leg horizontal or higher, at this time i started physical therapy 3 times a day.

3. After a month i left the walking boot but i had to keep the cane, i could increase the amount of time walking and gradually stopped the physical therapy.

I hope that my experience can help you and that you ask your specialist every single doubt you have, because it's important to know every detail related to your health, and my injury wasn't as bad as yours, and most of all, what can i tell you, is totally demoralizing to lose your mobility due to an accident that can seem silly afterward. And not because you feel little or no pain after the first weeks it doesn't mean you are healed, those injuries take a long time to fully heal.

Is it possible to stay downstairs for the time being? Like maybe a makeshift bed in the living room on the first floor? Shouldn't disturb your mother so much, unless the entire first floor is a single room where she sleeps in as well.

Not a chance in Hell...

For starters, I would have absolutely no privacy. The only room separate from the rest is her bedroom and the bathroom. Even though there's over 1400 sq.ft. on that floor alone, there's only one bedroom. The foyer, living room, and dining room are all open to each other.

I love my mother dearly, but there's no way I could even spend a weekend down there with her and no room of my own to escape to, let alone 4-6 weeks...

What you propose is a sure fire recipe for matricide.
