Hey Guys:

I have a computer problem that has been going on for the past week. Last Saturday, I was cleaning my monitor screen and later on decided to leave and turn off my PC altogether. When I return, I had homework to do and decided to turn it back on with no problem. However, the next day, while booting up my PC, I discovered that my monitor screen was totally dark while my PC is was going through its routine of booting up.

After being so frustrated and not knowing what to do, I decided to check all my cords, plugs and outlets and discovered that the monitor cord with the end spoke attachment was somewhat loose and I had to jiggle it in order to get a display on my monitor screen.

Once that is done, I have no problem throughout the time I have my PC operating. Even when I turn off my PC for the evening, the monitor standby light is on throughout the night, but when I turn on the power, it goes out again, and I have to jiggle the loose cord or take the plug in end of the cord out of the back area of the monitor and then plug it back in to get a viewable monitor screen.

With all that being said, do you think I need to purchase a new cord for my monitor or could it be something else?

Thanks in advance for your advice...

Sorry, but it sounds like you need to purchase a new monitor. Is it flatscreen or tube?

im no expert but i if you can test this:
1.use your monitor on a diffrent computer if you have any, its sound like when you turn your computer on and only then the cable get lose so inorder to check if its not the video card test the moniter on another computer.
2.just to be sure, the cord have 2 screws, did you turn them all the way?
3. look at the cord, make sure that the pins are all straight, if one of them is not that could cause a disconnection that was fixed when you moved the cord around
4. press the off button on your screen when the computer is on and when its off and check if the moniter turned on or not

hopfully you will be able to fix it without replacing the cord becuase as far as i know that mean replacing the moniter too

Hi,
that could be faulty monitor firmware as well. Try to unplug the screen's main power connector for half a minute and check if it gets better (I actually occasionally have a problem with my screen that can be fixed like this).

On the other hand, it really sounds like a faulty cable. Which kind of connector does it have? 15-pin VGA? If the cable is quite old or gets phushed around a lot (i.e. by moving the screen) it can break, I have seen a few VGA cables that died this way at work.

You should check first if the cable can easily replaced, some cheap monitors use fixed cables that come out of the monitor's housing. If you have a separate cable that is not fixed, you should try a replacement, it's not a big investment.
