Introduction.

To be or not to be is the most elementary question of life. Shakespeare was probably inspired by the word “being”. Humans seek support in their struggle to survive; they socialize and find protection in a group. But they have to pay a price for the benefit: their personal freedom is not unlimited anymore because they have to fit into the group. Many centuries ago it may have been a choice whether you joined a tribe or not. In modern life that choice is not relevant anymore; you are born in a society and have to adapt. Violations will be punished.
The man is an individual; we are all different and have different needs. We are not computers that can be programmed. Yet there are people and mentalists who try it time and time again. People’s brains should think according to their requirements.
The next story deals with this topic. It is a horror story; not suitable for week hearted people. Yet it should be told, no shouted loud into the world, so everybody is able to hear what the consequences of evil thoughts can be.

In the fifties at the insistence of Roman Catholic clergy underage boys are castrated.

A castration victim was taken care of by the brothers Cornelius and IJsbrand Rogge and their mother. Nobody wanted to believe their story.

Cornelius Rogge is relieved but still aggrieved. More than fifty years he tried to get attention for his story. He felt responsibility as a voice of a deceased, in order to be heard the drama has taken place in the name of prevailing norms and values. The fate of a forgotten victim.

People could not, or wanted not to believe what he told. Even the comity (commissie Deetman) that investigated child-abuse by institutions of the Roman Catholic Church did not want to hear the story!

But finally, after all those years a newspaper (the NRC Handelsblad, one of the top quality newspapers in The Netherlands) brought the story.

Henk Heithuis, an orphan, befriended the brothers Cornelius and IJsbrand when he was 21 years of age. He was in a bad condition says Cornelius. His body was swollen. We were sorry for him and after consultation with our mother he could live with us.

Some years before we met him he had reported fornication in the Sint-Vincentius-foundation, a Catholic boys' boarding.
As result of his action he was taken by the police to “Huize Padua”, a Roman Catholic mental hospital in Boekel (Brabant). From there he was brought to the “Sint-Joseph Hospital” in Veghel (Brabant), where he was castrated at the age of seventeen. Reason: homosexual behavior.
His complete scrotum was cut away. He showed us; he was severe mutulized. We brought him to a good surgeon. Henk recovered rather well. He was cheerful and militant. He decided to take legal action.
That goal got destroyed by his sudden death. A traffic accident, a unilateral accident, no other traffic involved. Henk had told Cornelius that he felt fear; it was dangerous to tell the truth about such a topic.

Henk mentioned that while he was waiting to get castrated, six other boys were waiting for the same treatment.

This matter will be soon discussed in the Dutch parliament. I do hope it will result in far-reaching measures. But I do have my doubts. The Catholic Church is a mighty institution with many links to the right-wing parties who momentarily have a majority in the Dutch government.
I wonder which measures would be taken if the offenders of such crimes were supporters of an unusual sect or the Satan-Church.
The leader of the Catholic Church, who was responsible for this organization during those years, was Paus Pius XII.
He is canonized.

Tjerk the horrible history you've described is just the tip of the iceberg.

From the origins of "Holy" Roman Church, was a succession of atricità, all perpetrated in the name of God (crusades, inquisition, etc.. etc..).

In God's name were massacred and erased entire South American civilizations.

If people had the courage time and want to read up on these things, I am sure that something would change, if they have a conscience.

Banco Ambrosiano was an Italian bank which collapsed in 1982. At the centre of the bank's failure was its chairman, Roberto Calvi and his membership in the illegal Masonic Lodge Propaganda Due (aka P2). Vatican Bank was Banco Ambrosiano's main shareholder, and the death of Pope John Paul I in 1978 is rumored to be linked to the Ambrosiano scandal, giving one of the subplots of The Godfather Part III. Journalist David Yallop believes that Calvi, with the assistance of P2, may have been responsible for the death of Albino Luciani, who, as Pope John Paul I, was planning a reform of Vatican finances. This is one of many conspiracy theories about Luciani, who died of a heart attack. However, Calvi's family maintains that he was an honest man manipulated by others. Their perspective informs Robert Hutchison's 1997 book Their Kingdom Come: Inside the Secret World of Opus Dei. According to the magistrates who indicted Licio Gelli, P2's headmaster, and Giuseppe Calò for Calvi's murder, Gelli would have ordered his death to punish him for embezzlement of his and the mafia's money, while the mafia wanted to stop him from revealing the way Calvi helped it in money laundering.

In 1982, it was discovered that the bank could not account for $1.287 billion (equivalent to $3.1 billion in present day terms). Calvi fled the country on a false passport, and Rosone arranged for the Bank of Italy to take over. Calvi's personal secretary, Graziella Corrocher, left a note denouncing Calvi before jumping from her office window to her death. Calvi himself was found hanging from Blackfriars Bridge in London on June 18.
On 10 June 1982, Calvi went missing from his Rome apartment, having fled the country on a false passport in the name of Gian Roberto Calvini. He had shaved off his moustache and fled initially to Venice, and from there he apparently hired a private plane to London. At 7:30 AM on Friday 18 June 1982 a postman found his body hanging from scaffolding beneath Blackfriars Bridge in the financial district of London. Calvi's clothing was stuffed with bricks, and he was carrying around $15,000 worth of cash in three different currencies.[4]
Calvi had been a member of Licio Gelli's illegal masonic lodge, P2, and members of P2 referred to themselves as frati neri or "black friars". This has led to a suggestion in some quarters that Calvi was murdered as a masonic warning because of symbolism associated with the word "Blackfriars".

When I read this story, I wasn't so much shocked (since nothing the Catholic church can shock anymore) as I was horrified. When will people learn that when you try to cover something up, it will be revealed. The Catholic church will have to pay dearly for this one with their pocketbooks.

I see that a lot of finger pointing here is directed at the Catholic Church. Let's face it, MOST religions are totally against homosexuality. The Church of England seems, under the present Archbishop of Canterbury, to be more "liberal" particularly over Gay Marriage. His "successor apparent" is not so inclined and the Church's daughter, the Anglican Church, is threatening a split if the appointment of Gay Bishops goes ahead.

If we look at the "New World" well, most of us know of the level of hatred against Gays in the USA by a large proportion of Republicans and a good number of Democrats thrown in for good measure! Presidential Candidate, Rich Santorum, is actually on record as saying that he would like to go back to the Stone Age and make homosexual relations ILLEGAL!

As a Jew and an Israeli, here we are fortunate that the rights of Gays are protected by our Basic Law (Israeli type of Constitution) and we have Pride Parades in Jerusalem,Tel Aviv (regarded as the "most Gay friendly city in the world") and Haifa. In spite of all the criticism of Israel, many Palestinian Gays have found refuge in Israel as, like Catholicism, homosexuality is forbidden in Islam. Countries like Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Iran and other Muslim countries, even have the Death Penalty for homosexual relations. In Iran executions of homosexuality are pretty common. In Israel, like many other countries, the Right Wing and the Ultra-Orthodox and the Orthodox not so "ultra" condemn and vilify Gays but we have an openly Gay Member of the Knesset and he is not the first. Nearly three years ago a Gay Youth Club was the scene of an attack by a masked gunman. Two young people were killed and a quite a few were injured. Immediately after this happened both the Prime Minister and the Internal Security Minister came to the club to express solidarity and condolences.

Maybe some of our members could let us know what the attitude to Gays in Eastern Europe, Russia and South America is today. Africa, we know, is still divided. South Africa, the country of my birth, removed the anti-Homosexuality laws after Nelson Mandela became President. However, I have heard and read that there is still a lot of homophobia in South Africa. Probably no more and no less than most western countries.

The fact is my friends, we are still a long way off from being free. It all boils down to Leviticus Chapter 13 which calls for "a man who lies with a man as he would with a woman" to be put to death as it is an "abomination". But, the proceeding verse tells us to put the adulterer to death but adultery is not an "abomination" but is is forbidden in the Ten Commandments but homosexuality is not! Well, and I don't want to offend the religious among us, but to me comedian Bill Maher's (who is a Catholic) description of the Bible as "The Jewish Book of Fairy Tales" quite valid! I suppose Moses was also an homophobic conservative!

I am a firm believer that religion is the root of all evil. Just look how many have been butchered in its name over the ages!

The thing that get's me about religion is that god's supposed representatives on earth seem to be invariably horrible people. Take for example god's vicar on earth for the roman catholics, Benedict XVI. He is wild eyed for christ's sake.
