Yes at one time gay porn (like straight porn) tried to have a "plot" to their movies and the late 70's, 80's and early '90's were prime time for this! Eventually they ALL just went right to the getting naked and fucking but there were good titles involving actors like Jeff Stryker (often FORGOTTEN these days) and Ryan Idol - the studios that produced these had a lot of other movies with so-called plots. Anyone else have suggestions?

Ryder starred in only thirteen gay films from 1982 to 1986, but pictures of his face and body appeared in dozens of issues of gay porn magazines such as Drummer, Honcho, Stallion, and Mandate from 1982 to the 1990s. As recent as 2000, Unzipped featured several unpublished photos of Ryder in two separate issues. Even after more than twenty years after their initial release, videos featuring Ryder continue to gain new audiences. It is too bad he got caught up in the AIDS crisis. Ryder died of AIDS-related complications in 1991.

Funny you should mention Screen Play, I just ran across it while looking for videos with actors from another film, SFO San Francisco Orgy. Mike Carr was in both films, I'll have to look it up. SFO was one of the first sex mags I ever got, with scenes from the film. It provided many, many nights of fun. Some of the guys in it were awesome. It had a few of the bearded hairy 80s type guys that I've never been attracted to, but lost of smooth, hot young guys too (in the 80s, I was a smooth, hot young guy too ). I don't know how I've missed it through my many years of movie watching, but I had never seen it on film until this morning. It was like meeting old friends from decades ago. The film holds up well, at least for me, except why in hell they thought it was a good idea to loop the same instrumental track (or any music, for that matter) for 70 minutes beats me. The filming and the sex are good, though sadly some of the bottoms have harder dicks than their tops. But it is certainly worth watching (again and again.)

As someone mentioned, the really early stuff was all done on film. It wasn't until the 80s that video tape took over. So companies like Bijou that get their hands on the original film stock can do very good transfers to DVD.

Sadly, there's not much hope for the 80s & 90s stuff getting much better quality.

My experience with vintage vs modern is that while today's films are sharper better lit and feature some absolutely gorgeous cocks going everywhere in everyone, I still enjoy the story lines and pacing of the vintage
Never in quite so much of a rush to the sex but seeming to know when to step up the action
Today's have less of the setup and more of the let's move to what's expected without the buildup that for me sets the mood for my night
