Cynthia Nixon: Gay by Choice?

“For me, it is a choice,” Nixon told the Times. “I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me.”

“I also feel like people think I was walking around in a cloud and didn’t realize I was gay, which I find really offensive,” she told the Times. “I find it offensive to me, but I also find it offensive to all the men I’ve been out with.”

“I say it doesn’t matter if we flew here or we swam here. It matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not,” she told the Times about her decision to be with Marinoni.

When I heard this, I could not believe that someone that's in the media spotlight who is a married gay individual has the audacity to say something so ridiculous. The reason I say this is because when you have so many teenagers who are committing suicide due to being bullied or confused about their sexuality and for this stupid idiot to say that for her being gay is a choice, then what about them??? so, you're telling me that if being gay is a choice then they were asking to be bullied or to contemplate suicide???...And to add to the matter, is that you have some of these so-called presidential candidates who have made no issue proclaiming how they feel about being gay and yet to have someone from the gay community to make such a statement that goes beyond belief. To conclude, on a personal note, if being gay is a choice then I know this would be a lifestyle that I would not have chosen. However, because I was born this way, this is a life that I have accepted and embraced and everyone who has a problem with it can kiss my ass...

Ok, she isn't describing your experience, but neither is she calling your experience inauthentic. She is saying that for her, this is how she experiences sexuality. You cannot require her to lie just because it would be more politically expedient for you.

It's a big worldd out there. You don't get to define it; just observe it

That's her decision. I don't think we should judge her for how she lives her life. I personally don't think it's a choice, and I'm a bisexual who people supposedly think can choose the gender they want to be with. It's not like she's one of those fundies who force other people to live by their rules. I would turn into Perez Hilton if I start to attack anyone who disagree with my opinion.

So she's born bisexual?

I don't know Stoic, people have different experiences in life that may make them react in different ways. I don't think that there is set law on sexuality. I don't know if I was born gay, all I do know is I chose to have sex with men, because that is what I was attracted to.
I think that we can't help who we are attracted to, at the end of the day it is just all labels. This is what makes people happy, we label you this, or that, then we know what pidgeon hole to fit you in. Where really they should be seeing others as fellow humans.

She's bisexual and is confusing "choice" with "preference".

This would be the one time that I wish just like her character on "Sex and the City", she would be pretty much ignored. But alas, you know it's just going to get out there and help some loose nuts with their version of hate.

It's not about her defining her own sexuality; she has that right. But at the risk of incurring the wrath of many, she spoke on a public platform and raised her voice for ALL of LGBT life; not just her own. When she did that, she knew she would definitely be heard and unfortunately, it was not the right words to say.

There's nothing wrong with sharing your own thoughts on your own world... but when you bring a fuller view of people into it, you might have to watch what you say because you will offend someone. And that's exactly what she did.

So she's not gay, she's bisexual.

Exactly. It would be nice if she could just say that instead of using her fame to spread a confusing and misleading statement that homophobes all over the world will latch onto.

I'm finding it VERY hard to reconcile the bile hurled her way with what she ACTUALLY said, rather than with what people seem to THINK she said. Let me quote her with some emphasis to help the facts dent the rage.

For me, it is a choice,” Nixon told the Times. “I understand that for many people it’s not, but for me it’s a choice, and you don’t get to define my gayness for me.”

She is speaking ONLY for herself, and it is as wrong for others to suppress her experiences than is for religions zealots to tell those of us for whom it is not a choice that it is.

Different people have different experience, they are not wrong, and they should not be censored.

Live and let live peeps - this hate does not reflect well on you all.

AMEN! Hate begets hate. She wasn't attacking anyone. She outright states that for most it's not a choice - but just because for us it wasn't a choice, doesn't mean that for her it couldn't be... To each their own. She is free to interpret her own sexuality as she sees fit!
