Hello everyone! I hope your holidays are going well and that your New Year will be great too. With greetings over, I now move on to my question: fashion.

Before coming out I prevented myself from "dressing out" because I had very little money and didn't want to be outed for having such an interest in fashion. Now that I am out, I'm trying to develop a better fashion sense and create my own style. I'm writing to ask for some advice on how to start: websites, blogs, fashion rules, what colors match, places to shop and just overall opinions on how to dress while having a certain style. Thanks in advance :)

First, find a general style that works for you. It's too common that a person will have nice clothing that's well coordinated and a good haircut but, never the less, it either looks ugly or, at best, not right on him because he simply doesn't have the basic ground work to pull off the desired look. A tall person might want to shy away from stripes while a short person might do well to embrace them. A fat person might inadvertently amplify his worst features because he just refused to believe size 7s were too small and a person with great natural curves might have his best features never noticed because he lacked the confidence to put on that slim little number his boyfriend thought would look great on him.

With that said, if you want to be unique, maybe look at the thrift store as well as TJMaxx (and other places that buy close out) along with clearance racks at the nicer department stores as those spots have the clothing most likely to be different from what everyone else is wearing. At the same time, that will also put you face to face with some unsightly options but so does shopping mainstream.

Also, try to keep it practical; especially with hair. Just because you get your hair to look a certain way one day doesn't mean it'll look the same the next. Also, one style of clothing and hair may look good with a freshly shaved face but not so nice with a five o'clock shadow and vice versa. It'll take awhile to find something that meets the criteria of being easy enough to style in the morning while still looking great and standing out but still flows right with your wardrobe.

Simply doing a Google image search using various terms can help you get some ideas to try pushing for with clothing and hair.

In regards to myself, I keep a rather conventional wardrobe consisting mostly of slacks, polo shirts, sweaters and blue jeans. Stuff that can be worn in most situations and can be called nice.
