It's somewhat silly to have arguments about what words mean, because we have a book that tells us what each and every word means :)

Respect - a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements

Nothing AT ALL in there about submission.

I have great respect for the work of Steve Jobs, had he met me in real life I can promise you he would not have had the same respect for me! That does not mean that I am submissive towards him, if he'd have had a go at me, I'd have had a go back!

I admire the work the volunteers put in here, so I respect them for it. I'm not submissive towards them, just ask them whether or not I stand my ground when I think I'm right and they're wrong - submissive would not be at all an appropriate description! :)

cool, great for dictionary defs, but etilit was saying (at least what I got out of his stuff) that he respects the forum and those who work behind the page automatically without recipro. to me that is kinda like slavish submission, totally not what I am about, and would never go there for anyone.

also, why is a counter-opinion an argument? I disagreed and said so without being mean. that's not an argument according to Webster's (a heated or angry exchange of divergent views). nothing heated or angry in the least in what I posted as an answer to etilit. could be the argument is only in your thinking?

Actually - there are three definitions for argument in my dictionary - one is a technical mathematical term (lets ignore that), the other is the heated/angry one you posted, and then there's the relevant definition to a bulletin board:

a reason or set of reasons given with the aim of persuading others that an action or idea is right or wrong

thanks etilit. I disagree with the way those words are used. understanding isnt needed to have respect. respect in general is earned by how one acts. required respect, or being respectful outwardly goes to the boss at work and people who have control or heavy influence over you, but a guy may not truly respect those people if they are jerks. and I dont need to understand my boss or what makes him tick to give him basic respect.

so I get what you are saying, maybe. for sure nothing in life is easy, but understanding other people wont help that. I get it with full understanding why some guys take the role of terrorists and so on. I hate the reasons, I hate the idea of war, I hate that terrorism hurts mostly the innocent, but understanding all of that has nothing to do with respecting them or their beliefs or their reasons for terrorism - which I totally do NOT respect.

Touchee - it's a discussion then.

look babes..my point was this...try to understand everyone:) no person in this world is easy to understand and we all make mistakes:( but if we try to understand...would it be a bad thing?

respect is a personal thing...either you do or dont!!! and in most cases you dont even know the person you respect or not;) lol

now how stupid are we?

DOES THE FORUM RESPECT YOU?;) Respect is a two ways road

As much as I understand what you're saying here that you don't need respect to be respectful... this has Buddhism written all over this sentence. I agree with you on one side, I respect Bill Gates, I respect Steve Jobs and Linus Toldvald and all those role models that I have followed in my own carreer path... they don't know me so obviously they have nothing to respect from me... but yet l respect their work, genius and the things they brought to the world. Now as per this forum... the case is a bit different, I respect the work the admin does... and they don't have to respect what I wrote in here for me to respect what they do... but if an admin or anybody would come with a lack of respect toward me you can be certain that my respect will slightly fade away...

TRYING TO UNDERSTAND people that all I did for at least a good 12 years (professionally speaking) and frankly I've got fed up of it.... i still do try to understand people but I do not go to the extent of wanting to know them personally. So trying to understand people... hmm! It's a very good thing to do, i understand a lot of situation and social issues... but i don't really see where respect gets into this. Understanding is not synonym of respect.

I respect you for bringing everyday a very interesting question on this board, and I respect the fact that you acknowledge our posts by thanking us all... do I know who you are really no... but what I've got from you is that you do respect other people's contributions by making sure we know you've read it... I can see this kind of respect and because of this my level of respect is higher... no we don't need other people's respect to respect them but the level does change when you know the other person respect you or your thoughts. ;)

ok...so why would your level of respect change with theirs?
Uhhhm dude I live in the real world, don't tell me that if someone does something nasty to you that your level of respect will not change ;) you are just like me a person with feelings and thoughts and when something or someone hurts your feeling you may react in your own way, and yes level of respect IMO does change with the respect you receive from other. I haven't done any research in "what consist of a respectful action to one another" but this would be a very great questionnaire to put forward... but I've learned my lesson I won't bring it to this board .
