Here in the states service people are not paid well, so tipping is expected. My father and grandfather were waiters, so I try to be generous.
But sometimes it's just status to tip. A busy bartender in a trendy downtown club makes just as much per day as the upscale patrons.

I generally tend to be fairly generous with tipping for average service. Great waiters/waitresses get a very generous ones, especially when I can see they're trying hard. However if someone does absolutely nothing to earn one and are generally awful/don't care, then I will take every penny of my change.

Yeah. I don't care what Steve Buscemi says in Usual Suspects. I feel it's part of the deal and I don't see any waitresses/ers living in mansions.

I'm pretty generous too, BUT I give a higher percent tip in a cheaper restaurant. I usually prefer the food in cheaper restaurants anyway, but more importantly, the waitress/waiter works just as hard if not harder, so why should she/he get less of a tip just because the food is cheaper?

I worked in the service industry before and I never expected tips when I was rude and unfriendly. So when I get really really rude service, I completely don't tip. however, if someone is totally nice and attentive, and gives me lots of water at restaurants, their tip is the full amount of my bill.

I leave the usual tip unless I received or requested extra-special service. In places where they automatically add the service charges, I leave the coins and some bills from the change. However, I get riled up when the waiter or cashier automatically keep the change that I was gonna leave anyway.

BTW, Canadians not leaving tip is plastered with BS more than LV on a Louis Vuitton knock-off.

Too Much for Some

Many times I leave a 20% tip.

Service over the top deserves that !

I leave happy and the server is also pleased.

so guessing by my cyber bf...you dont tip:( lol

why dont you?

We Dutch are such nice cozy people, and economical!!! We save wherever we can. Buy petrol, you get stamps; buy food, you get stamps, buy building material, you get stamps, and so on, and so on. And when you have got 30.000.000 stamps you get a teaspoon for free! (Of course you do have to pay extra, but still saving money!). The first Scotsman must have been a Dutchman, or vice versa.
That’s why.

Very sorry to burst your bubble there but Canadians (and I am one of them) do leave tips, the fact that you have met few cheap ass Canadians (which also goes as well for any countries that have that practice) you can't apply that to the whole country and certainly not apply that to 34 millions Canadians. I wouldn't go forward saying that United Stadians are bad tippers because I don't work in an industry that provide tips and frankly I do not generalize as such. TIPS are not mandatory and some people can't just not afford to leave money (yeah it happens, not everyone is loaded like I am). As a Canadians I am an heavy tippers, and I don't even care in which country I am I will leave a tip even if it is not requested and I know a truck load of Canadians that would do the same.

However if you like to make a quick comparisons, go take a look at CIA WorldFact Book Website and learn what is our living standard in Canada, we are pretty generous and easy going... I don't sleep with my gun under my pillow (in fact the only gun I have is a huge dildo shaped as a gun when my cutie dude and I want to enter into serious ass play and perhaps the one attached to my dude which shoots massive amount of sperm, that's my kind of guns) and I don't lock my door at night...

Wow they have waiters and waitresses in McDonadls in the USA
I always tip my barber, mainly because he could do serious damage if you piss him off.

I don't tip,its not customary to tip where I live. I did tip when I traveled to North America. But its incredibly anoying, in tip-giving cultures waiters are trying to be nice and sweet to the point where its bizzare.

Gotta say, that's a new one on me. I've never been to a fast food place that had waiters.

What does happen is that, if they are backed up, they will tell you to sit down & then they will bring the food to you. And of course they also have to clean up the tables.

But I have never seen someone come out to a table to take an order, refill a drink, etc.

I have seen that in Atlanta but I believe it was just a try out... the owner had three restaurant in one (which in the Franchise contract of McDonald it is totally forbidden). Alex and I were approached to open a second Mc Donald from where we live and the reason I refuse is that I would not agree to serve food that I wouldn't eat myself... and I am totally not a fan of fast food at all.;)
