Does anyone know the effect of drug use during a pregnancy on the child and what and if there are any physical or mental effects when the child grows up

That depends on the drugs used, amount used, and at what trimester...

Are we talking prescription drugs, over the counter cold medicines, smoking a little pot, or shooting heroin?

Known effects are too numerous to list here, but among them are low birth weight, premature birth, physical defects, mental retardation, miscarriage, etc.

Only drugs prescribed by a doctor who is aware of the pregnancy should be used.

Your one of the lucky few then. Many times babies born to heroin addicts have severe problems, and are born addicted as well. You most likely were born addicted to heroin and suffered horrendous withdraw, but fortunately, were too young to remember it. However many experts say that infants who begin life is such agony are more likely to develop mental, behavioral, and psychological issues growing up.

It would would be advisable to get both a full medical work-up and a psychological evaluation, considering the extensive family history. Symptoms and severity can change over time. It's something you and your medical provider should be aware of and monitor.

So many things can fuck up a developing embryo... drugs are so much worse than caffeine... but anything that alters the mother's system will have an affect on the development of the child. Im not a doctor... but I fully believe this.
