Election Day in Da States....

As much as I despise most politicians and politics, I had to go out and do my commodal :) duty and vote today.

In NJ, we have a highly contested Governor's race. While I fail to beleive a person with a bank account balance of $150 million (a low estimate I'm sure) can truly understand the plight of us common folk, Jon Corzine, the democrat, is surely the better option. The other dude will oppose the upcoming Same Sex marriage proposal, the medical marijuana proposal, any federal heath care initiative and will probably attempt to re-institute the death penalty so he can put juveniles to death for their crimes.

A few important gay-related issues:

Maine - A measure on the ballot that would repeal the gay marriage law passed by its legislature and due to go into effect Jan. 1. It's pretty notable because if the gay marriage law is upheld, it would be the first time a State has endorsed marital rights for gay people. Conversely, if repealed it would mark the first time voters overturned a gay-marriage law enacted by a legislature and even worse, the New England are is considered the most receptive to our cause.

Washington (State) - It will be decided whether to uphold or overturn a recently expanded domestic partnership law that gives same-sex couples the same state-granted rights as heterosexual married couples.

Sheesh...this shit gets me so fucking aggravated....X(

Houston, Texas - Population 2.2 million, has an openly gay female in a tight race for mayor.

And for our Ohioan (ohioites?) members...another shot at gambling...is it gonna pass?

Sorry if I put everyone to sleep...X_X

Always enjoy discussing politics. You seem to have similar issues to us Brits, but I tend to think we're further down the road to freedom than your politicians are.

The UK is far more "the land of the free" than just about anywhere, and that's not patriotism, it's just observation, as there is still a heck lot wrong with this country.

I hear you there, X...there's no doubt the Brits are socially more reasonable and compassionate than our pig-headed population. The progess we make here is just so slow and its always one step forward, two steps back and thats just a shame for the younger generation that will have to continue the struggle. Anyway, if I get started I might never shut up....

Well, not a good election night overall...

New Jersey now has a gun-toting, socially inept and probably corrupt governor

Maine no longer has its gay marriage law. A terrible step backward considering Maine is considered such a free-wheelling, artsy, liberal little State. That's 31 States in a row that have voted to reject same sex marriage. And Maine is the first to overturn a legislative act which will probably open the door for the other few States who did the same to be challenged by the voters.

Washington (State) - Well, at least some good news...they approved to expand benefits for domestic partners

Houston - A mayoral runoff next month will include an openly gay woman who received the most votes of all the candidates.

And it looks like Ohio will soon have casinos. Yee-hah!!!

That really pisses me off that Maine lost it's gay marriage. Of all the enormously cynical, stupid, ridiculous ways to use democracy is to have the majority vote directly on the civil rights of a persecuted minority. So we don't get a constitutional convention, and big corporations will always get to run our communities the way they want to, but people vote to decide who gets married, and the church is allowed to interfere with political matters by contributing massive amounts of funds and on-the-ground support to make sure we don't become more equal. Really, if there is going to be a referendum on gay marriage, only those of us in the GLBT community should get to vote.

And we should likewise note that the Democratic National Committee did not give one penny to the pro-gay forces in Maine. Why? Because President Obama wanted it that way. He has done, and by all appearances plans to do, absolutely nothing for the GLBTs-- oh, nothing except pal around with virulently anti-gay preachers.

"Change?" My arse.
