"In a world..." Oh I know him - then again I'm interested in a lot of broadcast media

Well then, some names of famous radio/TV voices from the past that might be of interest:

Gary Owens
Robert W. Morgan
Charlie Tuna (Art Ferguson)

I was incredibly lucky to have worked (as a young kid in the creative production and engineering dept.) at KHJ Radio with a couple of these great voices - Charlie and Robert W.

Some really great voice actors did much of the premiere work in the cartoon shows of the 1960's-70's -

Daws Butler
William Conrad
Hans Conried
Wally Cox
June Foray
Don Messick
to name just a few of the greats. Try this wikipedia link for an interesting and lengthy list of notable voice actors -

Incidentally, Noel Blanc, Mel's son, succeeded him for a number of years, successfully imitating his dad's original cartoon character voices (Bug's Bunny et al), and very few people in the industry ever knew the difference.

Good heavens, you knew Robert W "Zappp you're Morganized " and Charlie Tuna ?

I only know them from old recordings but doubt many here in my country would have ever heard of them! KHJ Los Angeles was one of THE stations back in the day.

Gary Owens had a very distinctive voice too. A lot of people know these voices but can never put a name to them.

William Conrad was the original Marshal Matt Dillon (after the pilot episode anyway) in Gunsmoke (radio series) long before he became more famous as Frank Cannon

I was very privileged to have been one of their live producers (engineer/ board operator during my stay at KHJ. I also got to produce spots and some regional/national voice-overs with them for a number of sponsor clients. It was a total heaven-on-earth for me, a young dude working in my dream career of broadcasting. I was the beneficiary of many insightful tips and off-the-cuff discussions with Robert and Art, which helped me get further along in the biz, including on-air work of my own.

I only know them from old recordings but doubt many here in my country would have ever heard of them! KHJ Los Angeles was one of THE stations back in the day.

KHJ was THE innovator of Top 40 radio - the one that most other DJ's and Programmers in North America copied. The genius behind it all was Bill Drake, a radio Program Director who conceived of the "Boss Radio" format. BOSS in the 1960's was the term for 'cool, out-in-front, desirable" etc. Millions of teenage listeners got their musical fix (loooonnnnngg before the digital dawn of CDs and personal digital devices like the iPod) by listening to Top 40 Contemporary radio stations - and almost all of them emulated the sound and style of KHJ.

Gary Owens had a very distinctive voice too. A lot of people know these voices but can never put a name to them.

Gary Owens is still on the air and doing voice artistry, so far as I know. William Conrad did some cartoon voice acting (Rocky & Bullwinkle, Dudley Do-Right) as well as more serious dramatic voice-overs
