It's the typical Hide the Gay Away. So many TV shows do it. Their gay characters are strictly supportive. They don't have a love life. Certainly nothing physical on screen.

Hollywood sees straight people as the biggest audience. Everything is done to please them. They use gay characters to tell their stories, but they don't care about gay people. They don't care what we want. They only care about making as much money as possible. Those movies are expensive. All risks must be minimized. As long as there are more homophobes, who may even claim to have nothing against gays, but are disgusted by two men kissing, as long as Hollywood thinks there are more of them than of us, those homophobes will be preferred. Can't have a gay kiss when China just banned a gay TV show. Think of the international market!

I'm so sick of straight authors writing horrendous gay characters. Either the they turn us into tragic, haunted and unhappy figures who are killed in the end or we are sexless. Sometimes they even give us a female love interest. Think of the Imitation Game. The gay sex that ended the protagonist's career and ultimately lead to his death wasn't even shown. Sometimes straight male authors even project their desires onto us, like they do with everything, think of King Kong. They turn previously gay characters magically bisexual like in the Magicians recently or Half-Way Home or Teranesia.

Sorry, but reading between the lines of his bullshit PC doubletalk all I hear is...

Since I'm Asian, if the actor playing my husband was anything other than Asian as well, everybody would think I was the bottom...

P.S. The "Gay Reveal" was so tame that if they hadn't made any previous announcement of it, you might think he was greeting his brother...

Hello :) ,
First of all, I'm not trying to offend so I hope you don't take it as otherwise. However while reading your statement I can't shake off this feeling that you're trying to point out that the Hollywood industries milking off their profit to the max by pandering their biggest demographic at the moment. Ergo, they put out the least material that might put off their majority customers, and as a gay person I get that it suck when they do that but in the mean time, I also get that Hollywood was in the business of making money and not exposing cultural varieties to what I guess xenophobes or maybe a lesser closed minds, so I got nothing against it. I'm more surprised that you were furious about this. In cases like this I would go for the alternatives since I also know Hollywood is not the only one dealing in making movies, as other like indies (by far the most with LGBT representation that I know of), Chinese, Bollywood, Thailand (I love their horror movies, scare the crapped out of me), Germans (they also got numerous gay friendly or related representation) and many other foreign countries producing if not equal, better quality than what the Hollywood produced.

To be honest (Speaking for myself), I care more of the authors' plot and storyline than what would've happen to a specific character. Well, most of the time anyways since I sometimes get annoyed when they changed a character's physical attributes or personality from the books I've read. Blah..Blah..Blah..
My point is, what a pointless rage it is to be blinded when the other party are doing it for the money rather than for the good of the world, to make ourselves feel validated in the world just by seeing someone 'represent' us in a glorious manner instead as a tragic tales in the big screen or a whatever kind of screen. I for one don't need someone to be my role model just so I could be validated and for the world to know that LGBT people existed rather why can I just be myself and let them judge. This world of mine, only the people who are fated to be in it is the only persons that I valued their thoughts.
Just a penny of my thoughts though.

Media does not exist in a vacuum. It's shaped by society and shapes society in turn. The wider the reach, the bigger the influence. There's a good reason why The Force Awakens and Fury Road were praised for their major female characters. No single movie will change the stereotype of gay people, but together all media does.
