Romania’s LGBT Community Rallies Against Intolerance

This year’s Pride Parade in Bucharest was the biggest ever. And for those who took part, it was probably the most defiant.

Waving rainbow flags under a blazing June sun, more than 5,000 people marched down Calea Victoriei avenue in the heart of the capital in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, LGBT, rights.

Earlier in the day, far-right groups had organised a counter-rally of a few hundred people to oppose the march in the name of the “natural family”, by which they mean a heterosexual couple, married and with children.

Since 2015, a coalition of religious and pro-life groups dubbed “the Coalition for Family” has been spearheading a campaign to change the Romanian constitution to spell out that marriage can only be between a man and a woman.

Zadar, CROATIA - A Brazilain tourist was denied accommodation due to sexual orientation

Fabiano Vallim, a radiologist from Sao Paolo, who booked accommodation at hotel Identity in Zadar, received the following message in his inbox:

Vallim then sent the following reply:

Booking(.)com responded very quickly: ''Due to the owner's behaviour we have terminated our cooperating with him...''

The public and social network users reacted angrily to the incident, as well as the Zagreb Pride LGBT rights association. Anto galić, the spokesperson of the Zadar Tourist Board said that ''if it is true that the hotel owner did not allow people to stay just because they are homosexaul, then this is very negative for our town.''

Owner's son Alexandar said that they ''had negative experiences with homosexuals from Slovenia (It wasn't me... I promise.) who organised an orgy in the hotel and left a big mass'' after which they decided they would not allow homosexuals anymore.

At first Haiducii, I'm really becalmed that you honestly promised - ,that it was not you and friends who devasted this "Hotel". -

On the other hand I must ask from where this hotelier has got the information that this guest is a gay person? When I order a hotel room for me and my BF we never declare that we are gay. And this man has not mentioned that he will come with his BF. So ...?

The rude way this hotelier has disinvited his guest is really very "special". And the answer of his son because of the "gay-orgy" in his Hotel is - so I think - only pretextual.
Nonetheless he is the landlord and he can govern which one he will have in his Hotel or not.

But for his country it is not a very good publicity. What would he do when a black man or a Jew or whatever for a person will check in? But perhaps his family is from the USTASA?!

All in all it is more than harrowing that this will happen in 2018.

On the other hand I must ask from where this hotelier has got the information that this guest is a gay person?

He booked a room with a double bed.

In the context of the protection of the rights of the LGBTI community of Zagreb Pride, they responded in a reply that this was not an isolated case of this kind of discrimination. "Croatia is a country where not everyone is welcome, but only some have the right to leave. Our markets and streets are not safe, neither our beaches, the pirates and the sea," they wrote on Facebook.

Bad publicity for a country, where tourism is a major industry. btw, Croatia has the third fastest-growing tourism industry in the EU...

On the subject of double beds, you may be interested in this anecdote. I was in a hotel in the market town of Hexham one night when two motorcyclists (presumably straight) came in.
Biker. Please can you give us a room for the night, we've been riding all day and we're exhausted.
Landlady. I have one room left but it's no good for you.
Biker. We'll take it, we'll take anything.
Landlady. You can't have it , it has a double bed.
Biker. No problem, we'll sleep anywhere, we don't mind.
Landlady, voice rising. You may not mind, but I do. I can't allow two men to sleep together in my hotel.
Biker. Why not, what do you think we are plannig to do apart from sleep?
Landlady. What would people say if they found out that I allow men to sleep together?
Biker. Who's going to tell them?
Landlady. I don't like your attitude, you can go and find another hotel.
Biker. We will, we will.

On the other hand, when my boyfriend and I have asked for a double bed in hotels not known to be gay friendly, our request has alway been met without question. Maybe that's just luck but maybe something else. I like to think that they can see in it our eyes that we are meant to be together, ok so I can dream.

North Macedonia to Hold First Pride Parade

Skopje will host North Macedonia’s first Pride Parade on June 29, according to the country’s LGBTQ activists.



The first-ever Pride Parade in North Macedonia will be held in Skopje on June 29, the country’s National Network Against Homophobia and Transphobia, gathering human rights NGOs, told a press conference on Monday.

“The gay parade will be a form of protest for affirmation, support and protection of human rights of the LGBTQ people,” said activist Antonio Mihajlov.

He said that the event will be open for all to attend, no matter their nationality, faith, gender or sexual orientation.

Irena Cvetkovic, who is part of the parade organisation, said that they will put in all efforts to monitor the event, along with the police, in order to make participants feel completely safe.

Despite having a lively LGBTQ community that each year organises various lower-profile activities, North Macedonia is among the last of the Balkan countries to hold a Pride march.

The country came under fire over gay rights during the past authoritarian rule of the conservative VMRO DPMNE party, which was ousted in mid-2017, after a series of mob attacks on an LGBT centre in Skopje. The then government was widely accused by human rights activists of concealing the attackers.

Burgeoning Drag Scene Pushes Boundaries in Macho Serbia



Socially conservative Serbia might not seem a natural stage for gender-bending performance artists – but a new generation of drag kings and queens is determined to make its presence felt.

When Zoe Gudovic isn’t fighting for women’s rights or teaching a theater class, she is performing as a drag king named Zed Zeldic Zed.

Zed has a dark moustache and a nasty tongue. “I like, in this life, to provoke,” Gudovic, 41, a lesbian “art activist” says.

Zed is one of the very few drag kings to perform in Serbia, and in the Balkans in general, and sets out to be provocative.

However, it is a surprise that socially conservative Serbia has a drag scene at all.

This year’s Ljubljana Pride Festival was presented under two weeks of LGBTIQ+ activities and events celebrating all the colours of the rainbow in the capital. It started on Tuesday 11 June, and ended on Saturday 22 June with the annual parade through the city that itself ends in Novi trg with speeches and live performances, before moving on into various clubs and other venues around town.

The first Pride Parade in Ljubljana was organized in 2001 to commemorate the riots against the police raid at New York City's Stonewall Inn in 1969 and as a response to narrow-minded and offensive behaviour on the part of the staff at one of Ljubljana's catering outlets.

It's hard to conceive of porn as having much substance to be honest. Surely in our hearts we all know this. It has about as much substance as the work of Žižek.

Žižek is clearly speaking nonsense in that clip. Perhaps you agree? I don't presume one way or the other what your opinion is. What do you think of the points made by Chomsky in the above clip?
