Feel a bit silly, but don't know what "soul" is. When I translate it to Dutch it means "ziel". And that means your deep inner feeling, something that is typical and unique for you. When it is that what you mean, I would say listen to Jacques Brel, Patrick Bruel, or Leo Ferre. All white people and loaded with "ziel". (nothing wrong with our black buddies, I love their songs)

I think soul has also got a strong underlying element of compassion or feeling for the suffering of others running through it. It's always quite a rare quality, and these days not many singers, black or white, have it.

I tried

Tjerk12, listen to James Brown.... and then re-phrase your reply! ;)

I am willing to re-phrase my text. But first I have to explain what music means to me. My education is technical. I love to make things and admire the way things are made. But on the other hand I love arts. Where in my technical part the basic way of thinking is logic, there is in my artistically part no logic. That’s only feeling. I like music when it touches me. I must feel shivers on my back. And that only happens with music that shows passion. I like classical music. I have hundreds of records. For me mainly rubbish. The players do exactly what the component meant. A good job of course, but it doesn’t touch me. I know James Brown and I must admit that it touches me, but not as much as for example Aafje Heynis or Enrico Caruso. So forgive me when I can’t think in styles. But I tried to understand, so I searched the internet. Technical I know now what Soul music is and how it arose.
And in my search I found some names for you (white soul singers):

Willie DeVille
Marc Broussard
James Hunter
Robin Thicke
Paul Rogers
Mike Harrison
Steve Marriot
Titiyo Jah

I don't think classical (or serious) music is less popular. In fact I'd say over here it's had a rise in popularity, largely because of the easier access to it from a different presentation style by a national commercial station that plays mostly the more famous bits in the style of a pop station. In the past the only way to hear it was on a far more serious BBC station. When I was young I actually listened to far more than I do now.

As for sex in music that ain't new !! Just have a listen to some of those great blues or R&B songs of the 1940s & 50s! The original phrases "rock me all night long" or "rock and roll" in songs had nothing to do with what we think of today, they were hidden terms for having sex ;) The influence of those early blues songs has obviously developed over time more into the mainstream, whereas back then the white audiences only had the sanitised versions!

I know this has gone away from the original poster's topic, but what I've noticed about all forms of music is, first, it's ability to evoke an enormously wide range of emotions within me (e.g. from sadness, through love, to anger). Second, I can lose my sense of self completely, along with all my worries & anxieties, in the music that I like. I think this last characteristic is one reason why people like to go to raves or concerts (depending on your taste) at the week-end. It helps us forget, temporarily, all our anxieties about work, relationships, identity, etc.
