Hey guys-

Was hoping someone could help. Since last night, everytime I've tried to download from any Rapidshare page, I get this error message:

"Your IP address [# here] is already downloading a file. Please wait until the download is completed."

Thing is, I'm not downloading anything. Tried disconnecting and rebooting a few times but it's still happening. Has anyone been through this, or have any ideas about a solution?

There's a general message at the bottom of the message that addresses this: "If you are getting an error message that you are already downloading while no downloads where made, then your IP is being created by a proxy-server. Proxy servers are placed by ISP's or network administrators to save IP addresses. This can lead to multiple downloads from one IP."

Thanks,
G

Firstly do the following

1. Open the Command Prompt (from the Start button, go to Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt).
2. In the command prompt window, type ipconfig release
3. In the command prompt window, type ipconfig renew
4. Exit the Command Prompt by typing exit

Tips

ipconfig release {Press Enter}

ipconfig renew

To check your IP address, type ipconfig
To check detailed information about your TCP/IP settings, type ipconfig all

Win98 users should type ipconfig renew_all

After completing your ipconfig /renew, check what IP address you have by 'ipconfig'. If you have an IP address starting with 169.254, then you are not connected to the Internet. Addresses starting with 169.254 are assigned automatically by Windows when Windows is unable to contact an Internet (DHCP) server for an address.

Be aware, this feature will not work with all Internet Service Providers, or computers. Some ISPs assign IP addresses based on MAC address, and the only way to [easily] change that is to switch out your network access card

From the rapidshare support page

Our counters evaluate IP addresses. When the messages "Download limit exceeded" or "Loading" appears without you downloading at that point in time, it is likely that you are calling RapidShare via a so-called proxy server whose IP address is also being used by other users. The allocation of proxy servers is automatically carried out by your internet service provider. In order to resolve this problem, you have to deactivate the proxy server.
In some cases, however, it is not possible. If you are with a provider who changes the allocated proxy server frequently, you can become a Premium member. Premium Users are recognized on the basis of their cookies and not on the basis of their IP addresses. Unfortunately, we cannot disable the checking of IP adresses, since the data traffic caused by the free service would not be financially feasible.

Thanks, but unfortunately didn't work...

Really appreciate the time you spent posting such a thorough reply, but went through the steps and unfortunately the same problem is happening.

I went onto a free wireless signal elsewhere and Rapidshare works there, but still not on my regular connection.

Anyone else happen to have any ideas? Thanks again.

Do the following

ipconfig all

And write down the ip adress it is showing you

Then repeat the steps to release and renew your ip address

Then do ipconfig all again and see if you have been alocated a new ip address, as your (( isp )) internet service provider may have given you a static ip address in which case you are buggered

Also you mention wireless ... ?

If this is the case you will have to perform these actions on the pc that has your modem...router connected to it as performing this on a pc with a wireless card is an utter waste of time

Let me know how we get on ... ?

Hmmm... are you possibly downloading using an AOL browser? AOL, for some reason, doesn't allow Rapidshare downloading. If this is the cause, try using Internet Explorer or another browser to download.

ipconfig all didnt work, either

Tried the command "ipconfig all," but pasted below was the reply - didn't work unfortunately. (The browser is not AOL, btw, just IE and Firefox, but thanks for the troubleshooting)

Will take any other advice - someone earlier suggested I email Rapidshare at their support email - would that be ok?

"Error: unrecognized or incomplete command line.

USAGE:
ipconfig [/allcompartments] [/? | /all |
/renew [adapter] | /release [adapter] |
/renew6 [adapter] | /release6 [adapter] |
/flushdns | /displaydns | /registerdns |
/showclassid adapter |
/setclassid adapter [classid] ]

where
adapter Connection name
(wildcard characters * and ? allowed, see examples)

Options:
/? Display this help message
/all Display full configuration information.
/allcompartments Display information for all compartments.
/release Release the IPv4 address for the specified adapter.
/release6 Release the IPv6 address for the specified adapter.
/renew Renew the IPv4 address for the specified adapter.
/renew6 Renew the IPv6 address for the specified adapter.
/flushdns Purges the DNS Resolver cache.
/registerdns Refreshes all DHCP leases and re-registers DNS names
/displaydns Display the contents of the DNS Resolver Cache.
/showclassid Displays all the dhcp class IDs allowed for adapter.
/setclassid Modifies the dhcp class id.

The default is to display only the IP address, subnet mask and
default gateway for each adapter bound to TCP/IP.

For Release and Renew, if no adapter name is specified, then the IP address
leases for all adapters bound to TCP/IP will be released or renewed.

For Setclassid, if no ClassId is specified, then the ClassId is removed.

Examples:
> ipconfig ... Show information
> ipconfig /all ... Show detailed information
> ipconfig /renew ... renew all adapters
> ipconfig /renew EL* ... renew any connection that has its
name starting with EL
> ipconfig /release *Con* ... release all matching connections,
eg. "Local Area Connection 1" or
"Local Area Connection 2"
> ipconfig /allcompartments ... Show information about all
compartments
> ipconfig /allcompartments /all ... Show detailed information about all
compartments"

I use wireless broadband also...so have some experience with it...
Completely shut down what your using as a modem (cell phone, card, router whatever)....

Don't just turn if off...but pull the power; unplugging it or take out the battery completely for a few minutes...

then try again.

should get u a new IP addy then.

My fault

Try this now

( 01 ) ipconfig /all

Now look at the picture i below and you are looking for your ip adress listed, sorry but i had to alter the picture slightly to blank out certain information as my full name shows up when i run this ... but you can see the bit i'm talking about...

17-02-2009_04-58-40.jpg

Now that you can see your ip adress write it down

( 02 ) ipconfig /release

( 03 ) ipconfig /renew

And then

( 04 ) ipconfig /all

In which we will see if it has indeed alocated you a new ip address

You are using xp ... ?

If so lets continue trying to get this fixed

Yes and it is a name that brings shame to me ... therefore i remove it and all is well with the galaxy once more ... incidentally intensepump ... i know it's a lot to ask but as you said you use a wireless setup, could you try my last bit of advice to him on your system to see if it works ... or do you want to take over on this one as you may be able to get him up and running ... i threw all my wireless cards out last year and upgraded all four of my home computers plus my server to gigabit lan and have never looked back

I use my phone via bluetooth as a modem.

The only way I can reset my outside IP addy is by pulling the battery from my phone for about 5 minutes and then power back up.

The ipconfig \release and \renew command are ignored for the wireless modem connections.

If he is using a wireless router (like with a land line dsl internet connection) he will need to power off the wireless router to get a new outside IP addy.

last instructions still didnt work so...

...if it's ok with you, I'll email Rapidshare with the Ip address it claims is downloading and have them disconnect that connection, then try again. just let me know if this is cool with you first, or if you have more possible ideas I should try.

The Ip address that shows up on the Rapidshare error message is different than any one that shows up on the command prompt, before or after the steps I tried there, if that makes sense.

btw (and off topic), until this bulletin board I thought hardcore star wars geeks and hardcore gay porn fanatics were two very separate groups. But I suppose that was before Clinton signed this accord:

Thanks

I'll also try the 5 min powered off...

...though I'm not sure how that would work with a laptop. Thanks again for all the suggestions

Yes that makes sense because your external IP addy isn't changing, but your internal is. The source of your IP connection needs the IP reset whatever it is.

Thanks to everyone

No solution yet, but someone said they once got help from Rapidshare, so who knows - will update you all

And btw, Lord Vader, nothing but respect. Maybe it's not the same in the UK, but in the US in the past decade or so with ComiCon, computer execs ruling the world and many blockbusters driven by strong fan bases, being called a "geek" is a badge of honor (vs. the pejorative "nerd"). Many call themselves geeks and think of it as a cool thing. Kind of like how Star Trek fans call themselves trekkers but don't like trekkies, I'm told.
