Hand washing wipes away your demons

Hand washing wipes away your demons

According to an unusual study, washing your hands is not only healthy, but it may also put your mind at ease about recent past decisions. A couple of researchers at the University of Michigan conducted a study asking students to choose between two objects out of several they had ranked. When students washed their hands after making the choice, they seemed to experience less cognitive dissonance, while students who did not wash their hands behaved as if they needed to justify their choices to themselves.

People often try to justify choosing one thing, such what to eat, over another by convincing themselves that their choice is superior, even though both items seemed equally good a few seconds ago. This is our way of dispelling the cognitive dissonance choosing creates; if we don't do this, we tend to fret about whether we decided correctly. A couple of researchers decided to test how this dissonance might be affected by the act of washing, which is sometimes linked with moral self-judgment, but hasn't been tested much in relation to other psychological processes.

They set some college students about the task of choosing ten CDs for themselves out of a set of 30, and then ranking them in order of preference. For participating, students were offered a gift of their fifth- or sixth-choice CD. Next, the students were split in two groups— one group washed their hands, and the other just evaluated liquid soap packaging.

When the two groups re-ranked their ten CDs, students that did not wash their hands ranked the CD they chose higher, as if to indicate to themselves that they wanted that CD anyway. Students that did wash their hands, though, ranked their chosen CD about the same, showing that hand-washing somehow dispensed with the need to justify a choice.

The authors think this indicates that physical cleanliness may have a broader impact on individual psychology than previously thought—washing has been linked before to absolution of moral guilt, but less so to self-perception. The study was small and limited in scope, but if the link is real, we need hand wipes served with hot wings more than ever.

That's very interesting.
But would the results be the same if they gave the group another type of
cleansing task. So it's not technically related to washing their hands, but more cleansing. How about if they did a load of laundry? Or took a shower. Exercised.
I would like to see the results for those activities.

OK,

Now the sarcastic comment.

How much of our tax dollars went to that research??
When we can't even feed everyone or give them decent health care!
And what can it teach us??

Dear Federal Government Cash Cow,

I propose to do a study of the physical and psychological effects resulting from one middle-aged male (age 38) in good physical and (somewhat) stable mental condition attempting to satisfy all of the sexual needs of one entire platoon (20-30 men) of U.S. Marines aged 18-25. The study will last approximately five years and will only cost $3 million per year. This study is vital as a means of protecting our young soldiers from the dangers (injury, disease, blue balls, etc.) of trying to get laid in a war zone.

I eagerly await your check.

Thank you, brmstn69

Integritas0,
I like your comment about violent video games making teens violent.
I read an article not to long ago, and can't remember the exact time frames given.
In the early 1800's misbehaving and violent youth problems were blamed on a thing called "books".
A couple generations later the same issue was blamed on comic books.
The next generations problems were from something new called a "Radio".
Then TV, Movies, etc.
I'm sure the study about video games is correct, would be interesting to know if all the others in the past were truly a source, or are youth always rebellious, and each generation just becoming more violent?

Oh for flip's sake! This is just another matter for common sense. Washing your hands makes you feel better about recent choices in the same way that taking a shower makes you feel better after a long, stressful day. You could get all academic and say that the shower "morally dissolves" x, y and z key points of the day... but that is just playing around with words to get research funding. Even animals seem a lot more relaxed about any recent trauma or worry after they go through the routine of cleaning themselves.

But this is just about common feelings or common sense!

This reminds of a recent study linking teen violence to violent video games... but do we really need a 300,000 euro study to tell us something so obvious? And then another 300,000 USD study across the pond to confirm the "findings"?

Any kind of professional will do this... keep making up ways to justify being funded. Next, a group of scientists will treat of morality in relation to compulsive washing/washing hands too much. Or when criminals go through the revolving door after a crime, are back on the street (getting expensive therapy) and then go back through the same revolving door.... meanwhile the police have work to do, the therapists, the lawyers, the judges, etc. etc.

Some studies are worthwhile, like when someone sits down with a serial killer to find out how they think... but when they start postulating about washing hands and choosing Cd's... it is seriously time to deny that funding!

huh??? hahaha

ok, cross pollinations is a bad thing, but in the end it makes us better right?
