I'm just wondering if people are aware the Valentine's day is a made up holiday, invented simply to brow-beat people into spending money? If you are aware of that reality, do you choose to celebrate it?

Personally, myself and my partner don't spend any money on this invented day, but we do make an effort to have a nice meal together.

The Valentine's day is just another commercial holiday to empty your wallets. :(

I think this day is the same as every other day. If you have a special someone, then why wait until a "magical" day in February to show your love. :)

When you are truly in love, every day is Valentine's Day, and all it requires is to love each other. Express your love on any day or every day. That is true love.

As I said in a previous thread, Alex and I aren't the kind of couple to celebrate on Valentine's day... not just because it's a made up holiday, since Mother and Father's day and the very last we have in Canada created by our current Prime Minister (Family day) are all made up holiday for which I have the very same answer for all of them... there shouldn't be a special day to honor your parents' day where they successfully fucked and conceive you. Now birthdays are different, it's the celebration of one unique guy our girl who came to this world and still struggle to make it in this world. Family day, although a nice concept as our prime minister wanted a day that is only for family to celebrate themselves but as a dad I do celebrate my family everyday, every weekends, and tells my children how much I care and love them as much as possible... I don't feel that I need a special day for that. But Valentine day is to me a useless holiday. I believe you guys know by now how much I adore my husband and I show him everyday, every hours since 6 years and it will not change tomorrow. We don't feel the need to do anything special on Valentine day, no cards, no flowers, no restaurant but a lot of cuddling and kissing which is an everyday thing and the amount doesn't increase or decrease as Valentine day approaches. I just love my dude and he loves me and we show it to each other everyday.

I got a very beautiful batch of flowers along with a nice vodka bottle, a funny card and some incredibly cute pajamas from hubby. Then his two best friends friends had dinner with us, boozed us up and paid the bill. On top of that I used the nice dinner as an excuse to wear a suit and tie and on the way there the radio played Suit and Tie which I think is the cutest song ever made. He had a busy day and his meal didn't treat him too well but when he wakes up I am gonna make him feel as nice as I am flexible!

On top of that kids are in good mood because I gave them their own computers, and gave the girl an MP3 player with hello kitty headphones (the boy wasn't jealous because I recently gave him a gameboy when I had nothing to give her.)

The only person who truly knew how to celebrate Valentine's Day was Al Capone...

Any holiday is what one makes of it. Valentine's could be used by anyone from Hallmark to street flower vendor to get some $, euros or kwachas out of one's pocket - but one does not have to. Make a handmade card for that someone you've been thinking of approaching for quite some time ... Valentine's - a good "excuse".
St.V does not mean you do not show love the rest of the year - like you do not value your freedom only on independence day - but again, an opportunity to do something special for your special one...
Rather nice compared to some other holidays - e.g. Gun Appreciation Day :D

You are very right... however Valentine day is a little more special than other holidays and the reason is based mostly on a lot of people feeling alone and deserted on Valentine day than lovers getting together to celebrate their passion for each other. Even though I have no religious bones left in my body, I will celebrate Christmas... even go as far as to go in church for the midnight mass -- I may hate the whole religion concept, but I love music and Christmas carols are part of my childhood whether when I was singing them or hearing them...

I love Easter not because of Jesus resuscitation but the resuscitation of Alex after eating chocolate like a little pig he is and turn into a crazy sex maniac lol.

Valentine day, doesn't matter if I'm with someone now... it was the darn day that remind me often how alone I was before my dude, few relationship that ended that very day. I find Valentine day to be at the very same time a very cute holiday, but it is also a very depressive day for many many many people. I wouldn't be surprised to find a an interesting statistic number of suicidal attempts on that very love and affection day;)

Great point about the effect the day has on single people Jake - it puts a lot of pressure on people, and makes a lot of people feel really shitty.

If you are in a relationship there is pressure to spend money you don't have, and if you're not, it's a day when the entire world is reminding you that your love life is a mess.
