I've lost a few. For me, it's a momentary loss. It's the new porn that draws my attention.
Some day, the solid state drives will be cheap and these whirling drives will be behind us.

I have six externals btw. :D

As for crash and loss: That's why I always make security copies. At least for the important stuff. I use a little very helpful tool: filesync, which compares two folders and updates the new stuff.
http://anonym.to/http://freefilesync.sourceforge.net/

Once a month, quickly done.

As for external harddrives: if you don't have them attached all the time you should connect them from time to time. That makes them live longer.

Does anyone have any suggestions what hard drive might be of better investment?

I'm using Buffalo Extreme Mini Station. Perhaps the additional layers will prevent the drive from crashing? I'm not too sure. Consider those using drive bays though, it seems wayy more convenient to swap between drives. especially if you have 6

Assuming you stick to a major brand (Seagate, Western Digital or Maxator), there is no real difference.

For every person like me who has had TERRIBLE luck with Seagate and fantastic experiences with Western Digital, you'll find someone who's been badly let down WD and who swears by Seagate.

I go to a site like http://refhide.com/?http://www.dabs.ie, filter by the specs I need, then sort by price ascending and buy the first hit.

I agree with gb. Your best investment would be to buy two drives. I have an external "toaster" style enclosure. Very easy to pop drives in and out. This lets me use old drives I have laying around, and also when I buy a new drive I just get the bare hard disk so it's less expensive.

I do this too.

I buy real enclosures for my primary drives, and use bare disks for all my backup drives, which I connect using a Toaster dock like Topdog's pic shows. It's a very efficient model IMO, and financially efficient.
