Hotfile - why?

I noticed many of the uploaders here use Hotfile so I bought a 1-year premium account there a couple of months back.

Suffice to say, their download speeds are horrendous! While as a free user on RapidShare, Megaupload, and SendSpace, I can get over 1mb/sec, on Hotfile I'm regular hitting 1990s-esque speeds of 15kb/sec.

Doing some Google research it seems most agree Hotfile is brutally slow which begs the question... why is it the preferred choice of file host here? I have asked them for a refund but don't expect it. I notice FileServ is being used quite often here too, does that have faster speeds as a premium member?

I miss RapidShare before they changed their plans. :worried:

It also depends on location... Hotfile and Fileserve are in the Americas and Rapidshare is in Germany. Are you sure you are getting 15kb/sec? Try to use IDM download manager - it accelerates your internet connection to at least give you a decent speed.

And yes hotfile support sucks. Fileserve's support system is easier and much friendlier.

I've always found Hotfile to be one of the slower ones but it makes up for it by being reliable and steady. I'm never in any hurry to download anything so it can just work away in the background.

Like anything it slows down the more you're doing or the more you're downloading, but just one or two links is not too bad for speed. There is far worse used than Hotfile :)

I do think that your location affects the speed too.

i find sendspace the slowest, along with this oron thing people have began to use.
Rapidshare i dont bother with any longer because it's gotten so much worse in years.
Hotfile is pretty slow too. File sonic ranges from slowest to middle ground depending on the day.

Megaupload, mediafire and fileserve all have the fastest speeds for me. mediafire and megaupload being my favorites of the bunch.

But it's location based, and time of the day as well. At 9pm megaupload will max at about 100kb/s but at around 12am-2am ish the speeds can and have reached around 1.5mb/s.
mediafire is the most consistent with common 150-300 kb/s.

Free downloader here...
RS, sendspace, oron and others I use only if I have no alternative...
MU just gave me once a weekend of problems, otherwise it has always been great...
Fileserve and Filesonic usually range from good to slower than a turtle when I get the bad hours of the day...
HF sometimes gets a bit slow, but overall it's good... Speed, reliability, 30 minutes between downloads but now 15 seconds before starting a download instead of that 60 seconds...

Hotfile is the only service that I have had no trouble with and I've tried them all. With Jdownloader the download speed is usually close to 1.5mb/s.

Perhaps your ISP (service provider) throttles download sites, as their packets are easily detectable, as opposed to downloads from other types of sources. Some ISPs do that, as well as throttling bittorrent sites. I use Hotfile with a premium membership in the northeastern part of North America - and it's very fast, over 3mb per second average download. Takes very little time to download even large multi-part files for rejoining or unzipping for viewing.

Anyone know if IDM or JD Downloader solve the problem of not resuming after disconnect?

im pretty much happy with hotfile these days.. I cant complaint much as my country just launch optic cable internet with speed up to 20mbps.. im thinking of suscribing to that in the near future.. now im using a 1.5mbps internet and the download speed usually is 10-20% of the package speed.. so my internet speed sucks due to technology not due to file host.. however last year, they put capping on rapidshare and most of rapidshare premium member in my country felt really angry.. now it's fixed i guess..

Hi, TehStu
I have premium accounts of both hotfile and fileserve
both of them are pretty fast
As for me, hotfile is even faster
The download speed is 8M/s-10M/s

Hope this help you.

Hotfile is what I use. And its pretty decent, averaging out at about 1MB/s.
But I also use IDM. Tried JDownloader, but couldnt really get the hang of it.
And to longdongtex, from what Ive noticed it doesnt matter whether you use either of those download accelerators, unless you have a premium account with the file hoster youre getting disconnected from.
Though if I recall, using IDM with mediafire, you can resume downloads.

A good thing about IDM(Im not sure if JDownloader has the same thing because I dont use it) but when the download dialog box is up, it will tell you whether the particular download is resumable or not.

I always have around 200kb/s with Hotfile in JDownloader.

But a real annoyance is Hotfile is using recaptcha. And there is no hack out there for this sort of captchas. I wish all uploaders would use services which are compatible to automated downloads, like Megaupload, Mediafire, Netload etc. Speed is of course important, but not as much as hackable captchas I think.

With Hotfile you can't run the downloads with JDownloader over night.

What I'd like to know is why hotfile requires a captcha code for some files and not for others...

I have premium membership in Hotfile and Fileserve. Both work well for me. I live in the Boston area (US). Fileserve is slightly faster but requires that I open IE (Mozilla, my browser of choice always reports Fileserve downloads as "Bad Request"). I think they must know my mother (deceased).

Filesonic also works well for me, but since I am not a premium user, it is quite slow and requires waits and captcha. The others (Oron, particularly) I ignore. I've tried Oron several times and in addition to the endless waits, the files seldom can be opened by Peazip. Most of the files I'm interested in seem to show up in multiple threads if I am patient.

I use Rapidshare frequently for classical music downloads. It's slow and rude so I refuse to pay--again, patience works. It's better on weekdays. They say they require 15 minute waits between downloads but I find it safer to give them 30 minutes. My downloads reporter shows time finished and I know that I have given 15 minutes but they say I'm wrong and penalize another 30 minutes of wait. Again, patience is the only solution I can find.

Never have seen any captchas on Hotfile, either premium or free mode. Perhaps this is something just very recently introduced, and since I have a yearly subscription, I wouldn't have been subjected to the captchas.

Hotfile isn't great when you only look at speeds on a single download, but, when you do 4 at a time, I get it to go at 100% of my internet speed (5Mb/s) - what more can you ask for?

I've also never seen a captch.

btw .. today I downloaded an 8 part movie and got a captcha code just on the 7th file:?
