I'd love to be able to help one of the most active posters on the board who's helped me get off so many times, but alas, this is a subject I know less than nothing about.

Guns are illegal here in Ireland, not even our police carry them, so all I've ever fired is an airsoft pellet gun (which was great fun for the record). And all I know about guns is that they have triggers and bullets come out.

Hopefully someone else will be able to help out.

Thankfully they're illegal here too.

Rather bad timing , Hammer. Have you read the thread or heard about the latest situation in Norway ??

I guess this falls into my territory...

If you just want something for target practice, get a .22LR, the ammo cost a fraction of what other calibers do.

I'd recommend a Rutger Mark II or Browning Buckmark if you want a semi-auto.

If you want a revolver, get a Smith & Wesson, Taurus, or Rossi.

All of these will cost between $200-$400, If you want to go cheap, try a Phoenix Arms HP22, you can get one with an extra extended target barrel for about $150 and it has a lifetime warranty...

And for God's sake, take an approved gun safety coarse...

A couple of things to check out if you have the shooter's itch.

1. Listen to the live show or the podcast of Tom Gresham's Guntalk radio show. Aired on Sundays. Its nationally syndicated, or else use internet radio.

2 My state has a very good gun owners radio show which airs on Saturdays. Again listen live on internet radio or use the podcasts. The radio show is Lock , Stock , and Daria

Both radio shows are interesting and highly informative. They discuss all the minutiae of shooting as well as gun politics, owner's rights, and current changes in law like open carry.

3. How about going to a gun/knife/weapons show? all the states and Canada have them Learn about whats out there, people, clubs, instruction, history, sales. Kinda like going to a museum/weapons flea market.

I think the Freudian slip in this title means you just need a hot boy to give you a reassuring handjob, hammer.

Hammer, you want a gun. That is the opposite of a nug. Nug is slang for a girlfriend. So in fact you mean that you want a Boyfriend. My advise is "search the forum, nearly 100.000 members. There should be something of your choice. Success!"

Any chance you know anyone now who owns a gun? Who you could ask perhaps to take you out in the woods to fire off some rounds? You might find out it kinda scares you. It did me the first time I shot one off. You might say to yourself that "I can't do this"

It is a pretty powerful thing after all. When you fire off a good sized hand gun or rifle, you clearly feel the things power and potential to do damage. It might turn you off.

You may say to yourself "I could never shoot someone". Thats kinda what I think to myself each and every time I fire one off. I don't know how people do this. Shoot others, it makes you a little queasy actually. You may also think "What if I slipped and shot myself? " I do.

My point is you gotta be cut out for it, shooting that is, perhaps its one of those things you have to be brought up with by your parents.

I think your reading a little too much into this. He said he wants a gun for plinking and target practice, not for self or home defense. Nothing was even mentioned about the possibility of it being used for other purposes...

Contrary to popular belief, marksmanship is a competitive and recreational sport, much like hunting is, but paper targets and tin cans are more PC...

The pistols I suggested , the Ruger Mark II and Browning Buckmark are designed specifically for target shooting, not hunting or defense.

Believe me, I've been shot with a Ruger, all it did was piss me off...

With your gun collection dude I'll stay away from your house :rofl::rofl:

It's not that big, just a dozen or so, and almost none of them are "assault" weapons. I have a few that are modified for defense applications and the rest are precision target guns and collectors items...

Defense...
.38 cal. American Derringer

.44 special Rossi 2 1/2" snub Revolver

.45 Safari Arms 1911 5" barrel

Benelli 12 gauge double barrel shotgun (sawed of at 18.5")

Target...
M 40 (Marine sniper Rifle, based on Remington 700 .308)

McMillan TAC-50 .50 BMG
Ruger 10/22 .22 cal.

Belgium Browning auto 5 12 gauge shotgun

Rutger Mark II .22

Dan Wesson .357 Magnum (this one has three barrels 4", 6", & 8" with scope mounts)

I also have some of my fathers old guns...

His Colt King Cobra .357, he was a State Trooper and this was his service revolver.

Walther TPH .22

and an old German Luger my Grandfather brought back from WWII...

Now my uncle, he's a serious collector with over 600...

Agree, one of the highlights of the winter Olympics is the Biathalon. A weird and alien sport, a little difficult to understand what's going on, yet spellbinding to watch the marksmanship.

It IS odd!!!! You cross country ski your balls off then suddenly drop and start taking shots at a target? Was Ole inappropriate with Swiss Miss? WHAT'S HAPPENING!!!

That is whats running through my brain at full steam but of course outwardly I am also fascinated and glued to it when it's on TV...Biathlon right?

peace,

You try making a precision shot like that when your hearts pounding, your out of breath and the adrenalin is pumping...

That's the point of it... Proving that you are not only physically capable, but mentally disciplined enough to overcome the rush...

Really??? I don't think so, guns are illegal in Canada, I did two years of military training with C7 and many other guns and my parents (although my dad did his military service as well) are against guns in all their glory. As one said if he wants a gun he also need a course and a reality check on his responsibility of being a gun's owner... IMO it has nothing to do with the way one was brought up. I still have my gun and my C7 and I would sometime go shoot with friends at the shooting field which is managed my Toronto's Police... nothing really to be scared of ;)... My guns are registered and are double time locked in a steel case in my weapon closet which need my voice to open. :p Even my dude cannot open it. Although he does have my tone of voice he doesn't have the right pitch :)

Guns are bad news.
They're bad news if you are a bad dude without a sense of responsibility...;), They're bad news if your only reason to own one is to feel powerful ;)
They're bad news when you feel that just the fact of having a gun in your house is sign of security ;)
I'm more dangerous with a samurai than with a gun :p

Nice collection, that. I'm neither a collector or a serious target shooter, but I earned my Marksman rifle and pistol badges, back when I was young and restless for some kind of excitement. If I were to acquire a personal weapon for self-defense, it would be a semi-automatic, something on the order of the Glock 17, or Sig Sauer P220. I've range-fired both and like their feel and balance. However, guns are expensive, and (self-defensively) are often more dangerous to the occasional, inexperienced user than to his intended target. I was instructed long ago never to cock a weapon and point it, unless I intended to fire, and that still is good advice. The stats on being shot by one's own weapon (by their assailant) are high enough to make any serious person think hard before considering the purchase of a weapon that they would only use to threaten someone. Since most of us are not trained to kill when confronted by a threat (like cops or the military), a handgun is not a wise investment.
