Wow - what a convincing medical report from a really reputable medical journal. Oh wait - no - it's a badly written blog post that quotes a grand total of one person and actually says that the link between oral sex and throat cancer is not that strong.

Besides - even if you do let the word of a single doctor quoted by a single blog change your whole life, it would only stop promiscuous oral sex. No problem at all within a monogamous relationship.

I'm not gonna lose any sleep of this just yet.

Thanks for posting this Sphins5... raising awareness of health alerts is never a bad thing. Thankfully it looks as if this one is a bit of scare-mongering.


This is an extract from an issue of The New Scientist magazine from 2008:

Oral sex can lead to oral tumours. That is the conclusion of researchers who have proved what has long been suspected, that the human papilloma virus can cause oral cancers.
The risk, thankfully, is tiny. Only around 1 in 10,000 people develop oral tumours each year, and most cases are probably caused by two other popular recreational pursuits: smoking and drinking. The researchers are not recommending any changes in behaviour.

And googling the Dr. quoted in the tabloid blog I see he works at a Methodist hospital, so he might have a moral motive for making these statements.

So far I believe there has been some pretty strong evidence linking HPV to cancer notably cervical cancer. This is the rational for pap smears and the HPV vaccine Gardasil. HPV tends to leave its signature on the cancers it causes(HPV wuz here 2004). I think recently there has been an increasing amount of throat cancers in "baby boomers" that have been found to have the "HPV mark". I may behind on my reading but there has been no evidence that oral sex is causing these throat cancers. Just people using common sense putting 2n2 together - but medicine is hardly ever this black n white. The interesting thing is that HPV is everywhere, 1-3 people will get HPV during their lifetime so being monogamous has little effect. On the bright side, these HPV throat cancers are way less nasty/lethal compared with the throat cancers you get from 30 yrs of hard liquor and cigarettes... cheers!

Thank god it actually stated eating pussy was the culprit I think I'm safe! I don't really find that article creditable. I listen to a lot of medical news and I have never heard any thing even remotely similar to this. And it was on the same page as a penis-finger length guide. that really makes it seem truthful.
