Too gay? Nah. I think he could do a credible job in the role. It would certainly enhance the box office by bringing in fans, the curious, and a few naysayers too.
Na, I mean, if he knows how to act, he can become the character. Shouldn't matter if he's gay or straight. I'd be interested in seeing it, and I'm not even the biggest Ricky Martin fan. Plus, it helps that he's easy on the eyes.
If someone can act they can play most any role - regardless of being gay or straight. Rock Hudson has already been mentioned, and Harvey Feinstein, who really couldn't come across as any more gay, played Tevya in Fiddler on the Roof - a poor orthodox jewish farmer trying to get his daughters married - and the reviews were excellent on his performance.
Weren't there rumours that Che was a closet homo anyway?
I'd only be interest in whether Martin can act. If he can, his sexuality or level of perceived gayness is, surely, irrelevant.
Off on a slight tangent.....I find Edward Norton really camp and most of his 'tough' roles have never convinced me at all. He's supposed to be straight so, either he simply isn't or he can't act.
I saw Ricky Martin play Marius in Les Miserables on Broadway back in the 80s. He definitely had stage presence and lots of charisma. I think he will do a good job with EVITA as long as the director works with him.
PBS has been broadcasting the Les Miz 25th anniversary concert with Nick Jonas as Marius on the last two weekends, cute as a button, and thin enough for Alfie Boe to carry.
Ricky Martin looks great, way better than Che. I think Che is considered to be a Jesus figure in Cuba.
